Philiz of this Parish has had a real good article published.
'The Perfect weekend in North Wales'.

Nice (and fairly accurate:p) read Phil:D

3 pages with some good piccies of the area.
Peeps
Phil and Liz are relatively new to boating.
But they have covered miles over the last 18 months in our Area.
Really used their boats , on the second one already!

A request for some contribution to the Mags was requested by IPC from this Forum just recently.

Dunno if this was a request or not
But it don't matter.
It's a good article and from two Forumites who enjoy their mobo to the fullest.

There's a nice article too about the South West coast of Ireland.
By some bloke called Cumberlidge, that's quite good, you been giving Him tips Philiz?;)

Used to get the mag all the time. But it got so full of ££££ million pound boats, I lost interest. They never did anything interesting. Not sure if they ever moved at all.

PHliz, Yep it's about a 65 mile slog across to Ireland. But after that, it's just a few miles to the next place. You can go right down the East coast and round to the South, stopping every 20 or so miles. Go to Dublin, you can do it on a good day. Then the wind will mostly be blowing off the land.

Go to Wicklow, it must have changed. WE mostly tied up to fishy boats that wanted to move around 4 AM.

Arklow was a good place to refuel. A fishy place. Sort of hole in the ground fuel pump.

Dont miss out Castle Town ( I think, Might be wrong.) A Harbour with a Canal type entrance. Pointing right out to sea. It's about three feet deap, but has no tide. Kids on peddelows will knick yer flags.

Then perhaps it's time you had a fresh look at MBY. We've made a substantial number of changes to the mag in the past few months with more contributions from owners of boats of all sizes (many from this parish) writing about their local cruising grounds and their boats. We've also added more practical advice on training and looking after your boat as well as adventure features such as doing up an old trawler yacht and cruising around the world for less than £100k.

Of course we still test lots of new and used boats (in this issue everything from an open 23ft diesel launch to a Ferretti 800 via Rodman's new Spirit 31 and a Dunkirk Little Ship) for which I make no apologies.

Go on, I dare you to give it a try. You might even like it!

I undertand the magazine is running 'The Perfect Weekend in.......' series for some time and are looking for other contributors for it. So have a go, it's good fun and quite rewarding to see your efforts in print. Contact Hugo and he'll guide you through what's required.

It's a good 'un!

Spent last night reading through November's issue, very impressed with the breadth and spread of the content. Lots of interesting stuff to read, it's clear from the high number of boat tests that the MBY team had a great time at the SIBS!:D

Just two things came to mind reading through.

I was a bit disappointed the page about red diesel told us everything we already know about the recent history of changes (derogation etc) but no mention about what's going to hit us all next, the change to red ULSD and potential biofuel content from 1st Jan 2011, the consequences to overwinter storage, water and sludge problems and preventive measures. Potential for something next month perhaps?

The other thing I noticed was that the Haines 40 offshore was tested by - Jack Haines!? No wonder it was a glowing report!!;)

Haydn you can check out here for free , http://gb.zinio.com/reader.jsp?o=int&pub=117652628&prev=sub&offer=119692004

Dont bother with page 42/43 ;)

Pershing 92 £ 6.8M

Ferretti 800 @ £3.9m

But keep looking as there are much cheaper boats like

Vicem 78 @ £ 3 m

and if you want even cheaper try the

Monte carlo 76 @ £ 2.5m :D

Having had a quick look at September issue I agree with your assessment Haydn and I will stick to MBM ,its not a problem Hugo, each rag needs to cater for its own separate target audience, I read MBM each month but MB&Y only 2-3 times a year.

I make no apologies for featuring larger boats as well as smaller ones, even if you are referring to 2 pages out of the total of 96 editorial pages. And of course that's not the latest issue you are looking at. There's a new one out tomorrow with sea trials of the new Rodman 31, Bavaria 38HT, Dale 23, Beneteau Antares 30, Corvette 340, Levi 27 and Fairline Sq42 amongst others.

Go on, make my day!

I don't get all this focus on price. They're all just boats. Sure, they might have different prices etc but why don't you just not concentrate on that and look at what they have in common which is that they are ok to sleep on, have a party on, and cross the Irish sea/English channel etc in. That's what matters. Don't even think about their price!

I read the latest mby (the one with squad 42 on the cover) last night and thought it was excellent. The mag is really a very good read these days. I never boat in N Wales cos i live miles away but that didn't stop me reading and enjoying PhilLiz's article; it's the fact that it was about boating that made it interesting, and full respect to PhilLiz for managing to be on their boat every weekend of the year bar 4! It didn't occur to me what their boat cost and I'd have found the article equally interesting if they'd done their cruises in the £2m Huisman 60 footer that the bowthrust feature was based on.

There were some very nice rough sea shots of the Squad 42 and the article on Croatia cruising was a very good read - it covered many of the places mentioned in BartW's post a year ago and Rene's recent post on Croatia. There was even a pic of Powerskipper of this parish being crew on bathing platform for skipper Jon Mendez

Do you think they'll lend it to me to do part 2 on?

I also prefer MBM. The articles are more relevant to my boating. Sorry Hugo. By the way, I used to enjoy your articles when you were a muttering rotter at Autocar.

I don't get all this focus on price.

You sound like a Mercedes salesmen trying to sell a steering wheel as an extra

"Is cost an issue Pete"

"Well hell no Jon, now I know we are best mates and payment's no longer an issue put me down for two" :D

Just for clarity for the southerners who miss the North/south divide on the perceived value of money its the £100 a year per rag that is the issue, do I really want to spend 2 X £100 for two rags or just select the one from the crop that suits me best and then pour £100 of red into my tanks for the weekend........not a difficult choice ;)

I have not read that piece yet but MBM I think are doing something as they asked if I minded using bits on the thread I started. Of course not its their site!

There is no need to apologise, I didnt complain at the content in your rag, I just said it wasnt for me, Vogue is supposed to be a good read but I dont buy that either !

I would most likely complain if the content came so close to MBM that I was forced to change or worst subscribe to two rags a year , ouch thats a tankful of fuel !

As soon as it stops raining I pop out for a copy seeing as you have my attention .

Pete I'm Yorkshire, born in Leeds in fact. That's like Scottish, but with the generosity gene removed. So I know all about tightfistedness :D :D

Each to their own, but no-one's selling anything. When I read PhilLiz's piece no-one was selling a Beneteau or N.Wales. But it was still a good read about boating. That's my point; just take in the tales about cruising or about boat design and don't worry whether the boat is £5,000 or £5m. There are loads of things we have in common, and it doesn't matter that boat price isn't one of them, especially as its so irrelevant

I have really enjoyed the last umpteen issues of MBY. In fact, I was still finding things to enjoy in the October issue almost up to the day the November one arrived.

For my money, what distinguishes MBY is that there is a coherent editorial thread running through it. By contrast I find MBM much more random with items that I like and others which I don't.

I think the new format of MBY has really hit its stride now. If it was ever true to say that boat reviews always found positives to please the advertisers, I think there is a much harder edge in the MBY reviews now, with design shortcomings brought to the readers' attention as well as the successes.

Plus, I like the aspect of involving the readership - I have only glanced at the North Wales review by Philiz but I will be returning to that when I've read the review of the Sq42, Peter Cumberlidge's article on Ireland, the piece about buying a wooden boat...

It must be over ten years since I bought any of them regularly, though before that, I kept every copy.

As JFM says, I'm not interested in the price of the boat, just where they went or what they did.

It all became, this ones flashier than that and this ones even bigger.

Maybe I'd just read so many that the rot set in.

You're right, it did indeed. But currently and for the last several months it has lots of cruising info. Eg PLiz on N.Wales (with a pic of MuckyFarter in the background of one of the pictures), another article on cruising the Med in a Selene, and another (which I haven't read yet) on SW Ireland and a fab article on cruising lovely Croatia. None of those peices focussed much on the boat or how big/expensive it was/wasn't. There are some boat tests too, which I must admit i read even though I have no interest in buying the boat being tested.

You should buy a copy as an experiment!
