If i visit a few marinas in Menorca and Mallorca, will I be asked to show my boat's insurance papers when i check in at the capitainia office?

They'll want to see my registration (part 1 or 3 for a UK boat) I guess, right? What else? Passport? VHF licence (surely not - that's too detailed)

(Just wanting to get my papers straight as a bit of anti-matric tax planning)

Re: check in Balearics marinas - insurance papers needed?

As you know, we've been in several countries and ports over the last 9 months.
From my experience, I've only been asked for my actual insurance papers twice - once in Cascais (Portugal) and once in Puerto Banus.
I dont think there's any hard and fast rule - just have them on board.

As you say, though, the boat's registration certificate is the most important - thats been asked for absolutely everywhere we've been. Its only been photocopied though - never actually read. It COULD have been any old bit of laminated A4!!!

The other thing has been passports. Absolutely required for the skipper but sometimes for others on the boat as well. The best thing if you have time is to produce a crew list with all the info on it - I included Name (First names and Surname), Nationality, Date of Birth, Passport Number, Passport Expiry and Occupation. I did this for the run down to Spain and wasnt asked for it al all so didnt bother for the run to Malta and was asked for it in lots of places so spent the time for the return run to have a few copies to hand officials.

Incidentally, nowhere have I been asked for proof of VAT.

I have been to most marinas in Mallorca and I think I've only ever shown the reg papers and passports, but have had everything else to hand anyway, like you're supposed to!

Thank you Hurricane and Phil. Your reports match what happens in France, incidentally.

This detail in one place just handed to the shore official goes down a treat as he enjoys some 'cool' hospitality :-)

Not always enough, though - If its Tunisia you will almost certainly get the response "And a present for me?"

Usually you're not asked to show any specific documents when entering a Balearic port. Normally a marinero gives you a form which requires that you list the usual info like boat name, reg no, insurance policy no, engine nos etc plus names and passport details of skipper and crew and he comes round 20 mins later to collect the form and the mooring fee. I can't recall ever being asked to present official documents with the form. Basically in Spain, bureacracy is everything and providing you give them the info they want they don't care about it's accuracy. Occasionally, I can't be arsed to fill the form out properly and just make up the numbers when I don't have the info immediately to hand
Btw, tipping marina staff is not the norm although if a marinero is particularly helpful with lines or leccy plugs, than I give the chap €10 or so

I would take insurance policy with you. I have been asked for insurance policy on 2 occassions for it to be photo copied, but as others have said, very rare.

Ooops missed that thread altogether. Been away on business

Actually, we've only been into Mallorca once and that was exactly what happened - I got a form - filled it out and he came back a few minutes later to collect it.

Yep this guy was VERY helpful - we couldnt find anywhere to plug in

So, I was GOBSMACKED when he unplugged the Squaddie 58 next to us and plugged us in his hole!!!

Gad I dont berth there.

We ended up putting a splitter in - but it makes you wonder.

No worries, reply when you get a minute. I'm offline for a bit now - on boat from tomorrow am till Monday lunchtime, and will be too busy to internet much (my last weekend before crossing to matriculationtaxland)
