Hi,

I am moving a 42' craft from the River Yare to Yarmouth, Lowestoft and then into Richmond-London. This will be at the end of Feb. Has anyone had any fairly recent experiences of the cheapest places to buy diesel along that route?

Many thanks,

A

It's more a question of where. South of Lowestoft you will need to go up the Orwell to Suffolk Yacht Harbour (or Shotley Marina through the lock). There is nowhere South of the Orwell that is directly en route, Brighlingsea being the only place with a small diversion. Not sure what is on the Thames up river from Gravesend.

Just asked Fox's Yard Ipswich to put 500 litres in my boat. Before the 60/40 the price per litre is £1.43. Apparently, they have just reduced the price! So I'm guessing Fox's is not the cheapest price for you to fill

I usually find the barge at St Kats very reasonable price, if you are full when leaving Lowestoft you will have plenty for that trip.

Wow to the Fox's price! I thought we were in a falling market..

St Kats is not too bad and there are barges that are quite good once you get up that far. It is the Norwich, at the start, down to the coast where I have no idea of the best place. Apparently there is somewhere near Yarmouth thats not bad but i cant remember the name...

Thanks

MDL Woolverstone are usually cheapest on the Orwell.

Goodchild marine at burgh castle is probably the one you are thinking of

I guess all went well with the purchase then Alastair :)

Goodchilds have been the cheapest for quite a while but not sure how they stack up following the recent reductions in fuel prices. Another option is the Royal Norfolk & Suffolk Yacht Club in Lowestoft. If you fill up at either you should get to London okay. Dropping into the Orwell isn't what people usually do, not least because it is a fairly significant detour if you are doing the passage in one go. Be careful about using the barges on the Thames.....friends got some water with their diesel and it caused a bit of a problem.

U

People as in "people who just whizz by thinking there's nothing worth looking at" ? There is much to enjoy on the east coast even in a mobo. Make a worthwhile trip of it.

I think you have misunderstood me. I completely agree and would always advocate a trip to the Orwell, Stour, Deben etc, etc. it is a lovely cruising ground and I always enjoy our east coast cruises, even though we have the apparent misfortune to do it in a mobo. Not being keen on stereotypical judgements about people based simply upon something as puerile as what type of boat they own I will say that we sail as well as motorboat, we love pottering in the rivers and at sea and whizzing about isn't always on our agenda.

To clarify my original comment, if the intention were to make a trip of it then a stopover would be a great idea to see the area and to top up with fuel. However, having previously spoken with Alistair my understanding is that this was probably not part of the plan so my reference was about the practicalities of calling in for fuel when working on a single passage plan with tides to account for etc.

This was indicated by the 'if doing it in one go' part of my original post but I guess you missed it. Easily done :) :)

Wow. The price for road diesel on the other East Coast (Dublin) is now about €1.18, so about 90p/litre at current exchange rates. For MoBos, is it not worth organising a tanker delivery between you? I used to know 3-4 big MoBos that were doing that between them on a regular basis.

Cheap fuel

If you fill up in Lowestoft go to the fish key on the right as you go in its half the price of the local yatch club.if you venture up he Thames use the refuelling barge just out side St kats .fuel in hartlepool at the moment is less than 60 ppl.too many marinas out there charging too much ! They should be named and shamed and avoided

On the way to the boat we filled up our car at Tescos. It cost £1.11 a litre and I got another 4p a litre off with a coupon bringing it down to £1.07 a litre so Fox's prices were a bit of a shock

I remember the first time we filled Sea Dweller up 16 or so years ago. IIRC red diesel was about .20p per litre - happy days:encouragement:
