I have been deliberating about anchors for ages now and had a long chat with Mel over lunch.
She has just authorised/insisted that I buy a SPADE anchor, 15kg.
She says that I spend too many sleepless nights at anchor so we need the best....and neither rocna or manson will fit our bowsprit and she tells me she doesn’t want me cluttering up the cabin with anchors so it needs to live up front.
So, anyone know the best place to buy a SPADE.
I looked on their web site and the prices quoted in Euros are less than the prices quoted by the Jersey/UK importer in pounds!!
Another UK rip off I suppose.
Anyone know a cheaper place to source one.
Thanks
Nick

Bl00dy Nora. Just took at look at UK prices and can see why you want to shop around.
Saw a 25Kg one for £850:00. Cant see how they can justify such a price.
Think I will keep faith with my old CQR.

I didn't buy a Spade for my latest boat exactly because it would have been double the cost of the Rocna I ended up buying. I don't know why they are so ridiculously expensive in the UK.

I had a Spade on my last boat, and it was the best anchor I have ever used. I'm reasonably pleased with the Rocna, but the Spade was simply brilliant. It would just about rip the windlass out of the deck when it set, and I never dragged it once in many years at anchor.

You can buy them from Edel Catamarans in Cherbourg. Might be a good excuse for an early cross-Channel jaunt.

I trawled the web, not necessarily comprehensively, and found Foxs were the cheapest UK supplier.

Just had another look though, and their prices seem to have gone up since I placed my order.

Yeah, I found the same but anoying thing is the price..in Euros on the spade.com website.

Someone (importer, I suspect) is making a lot of margin.

Good decision. IMHO a brilliant bit of kit. Bought mine (S80) from Bluewater in CI after the boat show a couple of years ago. No VAT. Have seen them in the swindelery in St Vaast. so may be cheaper to buy in France?

Here are some prices (£) pulled off the web for various types of anchor, all 15 or 16 kg:

Spade 412
Genuine CQR 620
Plough CQR type 68
Rocna 330
Delta 130
Genuine Bruce 228
Claw Bruce type 80
Manson supreme 316

Quite a spread!

If you avoid the imitations, the Delta is far and away the most economical. You can go up to 20 kg (£150) and still be under half the price of the Rocna or Manson and even less compared to the Spade.

I can't imagine why anyone would pay that for a CQR in the 21st century.

Check out the Ultra anchor, its just an up dated Spade. Its made in Europe so may be cheaper but some how doubt it. Spades are not available in Australia but Ultras are. $1900 for the size you require.

New generation anchors are the most commonly stolen item from Australian marine enviroments.

Useful info, to add to it you can also get a 16kg kobra 2 for £107

Went into Force4 today and had a look at the kobra2.
Though it is made in 2 pieces it looks like its very strong where the shank goes through the plough.
I think it looks good.

I asked them what deal they can do me on a 15kg spade and the old guy (manager I assume) said £569.
I pointed out that they are £540 on their web site but Fox do them for £500 and would they care to match it.
He said no, £540 is the best price he would do.
In this climate?
What do they make on anchors, 40%+
I always found Force4 great but that was not good business.
Had he said yes, I would have a spade now instead of still thinking about it.

Methinks that if I was in your metaphorical shoes (but I am not), I would say 'sod it', and just buy a 16 kg Delta, and be smug in the knowledge that 400 odd quid is still sitting in my pocket........... ;)
Being 'cheap' does not mean it is nasty.
Deltas do generally seem to work very well out here.
