Cheaper moorings in Plymouth ?

I'm in Mayflower at present.
It's our 4th year there , it usually goes up about 5% a year. This year only 2.5%. I think a sign of hard times and more empty berths than before.
Our little 7.5m boat will cost £2600 next year and I've started thinking of moving somewhere cheaper.
Been thinking of the swinging moorings South of Ballast Pound , done by Huggins , these would be around £1250 I think but not all reports of Huggins's are positive.
Not quite ready to go too far over the Cornwall side due to the time it takes , ie. Southdown are worth looking at but take ages to get there and only give access about HW +/- 2hrs.
Been on the council mooring waiting list for the whole 4 years , no news yet.

I am not local so like to get on board readily when I get to Plymouth.

I know you 'get what you pay for' but have any forumites got any suggestions that might save money whilst maintaining some of the convieniences a marina like mayflower provides ?

Thanks

How about Millport bay?? I think they are cheaper... but how you get on their list is beyond me....

We used to have a swinging just through the narrows with a Water Taxi from the ballast pond.... a excellent mooring.. good service... but in reality you add the £1250 for the mooring... then the winter ashore/lift, etc... and I doubt you will save anything...

The Ballast pond itself is very tight... but with a smaller boat may be ok... though not 24hr access either....

How about dry storage... at 7.5 meters can that be done at the new Yacht haven facility?

Might be worth investigating... there is also that yard/marina just down from the bridge over the Catterwater on the right..... they have ponttoons and it all looks a bit rough and localish...

I take it you're on the Devon side. Even Huggins moorings will be awkward. They provide a free taxi but the pickup oint is at Torpoint.

Southdown moorings give better than 2 hrs either side. I am upstream from there and get 3 hrs either side. In either case it's a bit of a distance on the Cornwall side after you get off the ferry.

There are some moorings off the Tamar Sailing Club on the Plymouth side just below the bridges but most of the moorings in the Hamoaze, Tamar and Lynher are on the Cornish side.

ShoreStore. Good security in the marina reasonable in the car park. Berths probably dry to a few feet. Best of all - good people to deal with

If you are not Plymouth based, the easier and fastest access moorings are the ones just under the Tamar Bridge. Either side of the river.

Not exactly Mayflower-style facilities, though, but true seafaring ambience ;-)

Either that, or join the yacht club at Cargreen and try and get a mooring there. 10 minutes from the bridge (by car not boat) and about a tenth of your current annual cost.

A bit of a hike to the Sound each time though....
