Can anyone recommend where to look for a cheap way of mooring/berthing an 8m boat on the West Coast of Scotland, anywhere South of the Clyde? The best I can find advertised is £150/metre for the summer 6 months in a marina berth away from the busy Kip/Largs area. Is that cheap for a marina? What should I expect to pay for a mooring? Thanks.

Not sure what you mean by S. of the Clyde - it goes down to Loch Ryan in the E and and Campbelltown in the W, which only leaves Portpatrick and the Solway. Kircudbright has pontoons if you are interested in the Solway, but I suspect you mean the Ayrshire coast. Ardrossan (Clyde Marina) is a good bit cheaper (and less flash) than Largs, or you could try Irvine

I know you have decided on South Clyde but have you considered crossing the water? The other side offers wonderful cheap moorings. Tighnabruiach has got to be the nicest place to have a boat in the UK, it offers a very well protected mooring with lots of shelter and never a day goes by that you can't get a sail due to the shelter it offers. OK so there are few facilties and you need to have the boat swinging but the saving you make on the well overpriced marinas will pay your extra juice to get there and pay for a nice tender! The boat yard is extremely friendly and nothing is too much bother. I travel to Tighnabruiach every weekend from Harrogate in Yorkshire and it is worth every extra minute in the car!! Scotlands best kept secret.

Troon is cheaper than Largs or Inverkip, probably slightly more than Ardrossan but better road/rail/air access. Troon Cruising Club (c/o Troon Marina) have their own berths at less than commercial rates although it may take a season or so to get one if their is a waiting list. Drop them a line at the Marina address. From memory:
