I have seen a couple of cheap things on Ebay and wonder if anyone has any experience of them.
One is a CD rom with some charts and a navigation program. I fancy something to play with on long winter nights. I plan to buy a proper navigation program if I get on with the one I play with.
The other thing is a crab/lobster pot which collapses. I once read it was OK to have upto 6 pots if you don't sell your catch. If not you need some type of licence.
Thanks in advance.

The software depends very much what it is, there is alot of good free stuff out there though that may be more fun to play with at no risk.

The folding pots are neat, but not nearly big enough to be usefull for 'eaters'. They are too flimsy to leave out so really need to be put over the side while you are at anchor. If you want to go semi-pro and have six pots down at once, then you would do well to get the real thing.

My experience of Ebay is that occasional things are cheap but loads of people pay more than they need to.

SWMBO wants a dough hook for her Kenwood - On auction, these are reaching £21+. You can buy new for £14.00!

I sold a used dog guard for my car for £118 or so. Cost at Mr Ford's emporium? £114.

I don't understand!

I do, a lot of the bidders on Ebay, are muppets, they get 'em selves a dose of auction fever, and off they go! 'tis good entertainment sometimes /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

in the summer boaty stuff was massively inflated prices and now not much is selling and if it does it sells for peanuts.
im really tempted to buy a few engines and a few other things and put them in the garage till may or june.

The crab pot sounds like fun ... can you go far wrong for £7.50 inc postage?

Fun for kids, deffinately a good plan. The anticipation of waiting to see whats in it, followed by the delight at the small crabs and even fish. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Yes that was pretty much my feeling. The navigation CD is even cheaper! I'm surprised nobody seems to have bought one.

If it's the Tsunamis one, steer clear. The proper parent company in Germany is rather miffed with the vendor,a nd considering action.

The charts are all the '99 version, and the software is, err, temperamental. No support either.

Thanks, I'll bear that in mind. Although, as I don't plan to use it "in anger", even that one should be OK. I was more worried about viruses or charts that need to have codes to open.

Re: Crab pots

Is there a way to be sure they would only entangle themselves around fishing boats?

Worst pot marker experience this year: three o'clock in the morning, 15 miles off the Portuguese coast, water two kilometers deep, passed a pot marker about two metres away. It couldn't have been attached to the bottom (could it?) but goodness knows how much string it was trailing.

It was nicely marked with a float and flag, though...

I've got a folding crab pot used it twice, the first time I threw it in a rockpool baited with trout heads, on the north coast of Wales and left it one tide, I caught one lobster one huge prawn and two fish of unknown make. The second time I dropped it of the back of my boat baited with a turkey drumstick bone and caught about 50 small shore crabs!!

I drive an '82 S. Funny how some Porsche owners belittle people who shop for cars and parts on Ebay.

I'm a real fan of Ebay, I've bought computers and parts, boats and bits, mobile phones. Even a 28 Led headlight from Hong Kong for one cent, 12 dollars postage, its first class. Currently "watching" leather lounge suites.

My fishing business is currently listed at www.ebay.com.au
Item number: 270051486227

Now I doubt whether it would ever sell from Ebay, but where else can you write such a long spiel with an ad for less than $10 a week. Mention the ad to some of your friends and its soon on the market.

Couple of months ago one of the local yachts here was on Ebay. The woman who was selling it wrote a good dit about how she was done wrong by her then boyfriend. The national newspaper picked up on the story and the bidding became fierce. It still went for an exceptionally cheap price for what it was, but in a stagnant market it sold. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I started useing e-bay when I changed to a power boat and deceided that I didnt have the time to repair my sailing boat. In the end I got more for the fixtures and fittings than I would have got for the boat if I had repaired it. It's also a good way of getting rid of all the bits that have been collecting dust in the shed for years that you bought because they might come in handy and never have.
