Cheap sailing jacket (FYI thread)

Hi,
I was searching for sailing, waterproof, breathable jacket for some time now. Most of them are quite expensive and having yacht on swing mooring may cause fast damage to such jacket. Plus, I don't intend sail for longer period of times to rationalise such an expense.
I found that Royal Navy jacket, easy to buy on eBay, is very good. Maybe not as comfortable as top brands, but has Goretex, can survive rain and is very practical. Completely agree on the MOD goretex stuff - my winter mountain / Scottish skiing hardshell is a French CCE goretex jacket.

Looks aside, it is the best waterproof hardshell I've ever bought. Hood can fit over a helmet and baggy enough to fit a down layer underneath without affecting the lofting of the down. During the summer it lives on the boat as an emergency waterproof.

That said, it is impossible to ignore that a grown man in camouflage is a, well, a bit of a special look.

I bought one on ebay in 2007. Seller had dry cleaned it: the label says 'do not dry clean'. However, it has done good service as a back up sailing jacket, and is less conspic when walking ashore and is longer than my 'proper' sailing jacket. Still in use on wet days.

The jackets in that link are delaminating quite badly so I wouldn't expect them to last long or be waterproof. I'm sure the new ones would be fine but I'd be very surprised to see a Goretex garment for £60 new.

Not sure about the one on the link. My new one for £60 works fine. I don't think that its too low price. It looks as easy to make, design from 90ties, has simple features, cuffs are a bit irritating, but works. Lack of expensive branding makes rest. I will try to update the thread when it will have signs of use. I suppose it might not be as long lived as Musto or other HH, but still worth a price.

The one I bought had been used but was in good condition. Still waterproof after 15 years. First three years it was my primary sailing jacket with near daily use for 5 or 6 months each year, then fairly light use.

I wasn't suggesting the new ones wouldn't last, just that they almost certainly are not Goretex at that price. I'm sure they are every bit as good as a Musto or HH or HL. Musto make some cheaper jackets from their own brand fabric which are every bit as good as Goretex, but lack the warranty of the original fabric, which is what makes it cost more along with the name and in the old days their patents. Musto also seem to cut some features like pockets or face protectors on their cheaper stuff for no apparent reason.

There is a great difference between products that are unused military surplus being sold off and branded newly manufactured goods from a retailer. As a US Airforce colonel told me, "Surplus stock is sold off for cents on the dollar" European NATO surplus is probably similarly priced, and does not represent the cost of the original specification..

@lustyd I still think it might be Goretex. According to this website, 1.4x1 m of Goretex fabric costs 10 GBP: Premium Gore-Tex® Off-The-Roll. New-secs. Black. The fabric itself is not 'modern', looks heavier than 'modern' Goretex. It soaks, so eventually will be sipping water through membrane.
I think its might be much cheaper whey army orders. The cut of the jacket is simple, its bit baggy comparing to other designs, and long. Much faster to fabricate than modern designs.
