Hi all,

I'm toying with the idea of getting a small (cheap), probably bilge keel yacht to play with, and while I can afford the boat, I don't much fancy spending thousands on marina fees every year... Anyone know of cheaper alternatives to swansea marina within reasonable striking distance?

I know Mumbles appears to be cheap / free, but issues with insurance. Otherwise, wondering about the little place at Neath under the M4 bridge, Burry Port way or possibly even in the creek at Penclawdd. Don't mind drying moorings. Used to sail on the East Coast so used to shallow bits!

The alternative is to buy a trailer sailer and keep it out of the water somewhere, but that would mean buying a new car too...

Any ideas of places / costs?

Robin

You could put your boat on the River Neath or in the Marina which would be more expensive.
Thousands won't come into it but hundreds will.
Turn up on a Wednesday evening and speak to Glyn Miles the Treasurer of Monkstone Cruising and Sailing Club or any committee member.
There are very few boats on the river these days as most go in the Marina so you should get a good spot. Lay up available in the winter and excellent launching and recovery £35 a time.
There also a few boats for sale requiring a bit of TLC to be had at bargain prices.
Good luck
Harry.
