Can anyone tell me which ferries offer foot passenger fares between UK and France? This is so crew can join me or return home from legs of my French Cruise in 2007. Apart from Dover/Calais they seem to want you to take your car or the price is just stupid. The ferry web sites don't show any fares until you've selected dates, times, ages, inside leg measurement, colour of upholstery, etc. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Similarly now that the High Speed Ferry from Harwich to the Hook has finished, does anyone know if you can go as a foot passenger on the overnight ferry?

On short ferry routes you can get a day return - used to be possible on Cherbourg route on high speed - but not sure it is available.

BUT WATCH OUT - if you don't use your return, they will take the difference between the single (extortionate) price and the cheap day return. So you must only pay these with cash at the ferry port.

Better still - vote with you feet and fly - plnety of routes now available.

For train travel in France try Seat 61 for excellent general info and Die Bahn for the train times; this site has the whole European train timetable. I often use it for checking train times in south London.

On Brittany Ferries website just select "on Foot" from the vehicle drop down list.

Yes, you have to go through the quoting process to get an idea of price, for the last ten years or so ferries have been operating airline-like pricing systems...

In my experience it's Dover -Calais or Dieppe from Newhaven (Transmanche), Cherbourg, then Roscoff from Plymouth. And that's about it. The further west you go the more expensive, of course.

Flybe had a Southampton service to Cherbourg last year - abandoned now. Thereafter it's Ryanair to St Malo or Brest (also Flybe) Then going further south you're into more difificult territory - Lorient, Nantes, Bordeaux.

The big problem in France is that its local connecting transport services are total rubbish and the worst in Europe, and I defy anyone to prove otherwise. You have to be berthed close to the airport or prepared to pick up passengers in a hire car: eg. if the Ryanair services lands in the early evening there is almost certainly no onward transport available! You are on your own - not the way to start a nice hol!
