Can someone point me at an online kit or group of items that would be a good starting point for a bit of non-specific fishing in the river Tamar (tidal) and the sea?

Haven't really got much of a clue about what to get, so was tempted to get one of those telescopic kits which are all inclusive - but are they so useless they're actually a waste of money?

Ta!

not a good idea, try. tackle bargains.co.uk they have quite reasonable gear at good prices. If fishing from the boat I would suggest something about 8 feet max, a moderately priced multiplier reel 20lb line, and 30lb leader. Hooks from 3/0 to 5/0, links and swivels, beads, and leads from 4ozs up to 8ozs.

If you're at all serious about this, go to your nearest fishing tackle shop. They are usually run by enthusiasts and always willing to help someone new to get started.

They will point you at the most suitable rod/reel (not always the most expensive!) for what you plan. Are you planning shore fishing or from a boat? It makes a difference. The shop should be able to reccommend a range of hooks/lures/floats/weights to get you started. If you are lucky, they might even give you some tips on how/where to catch something!

Hmnph! - still trying to catch mine!

But agree, fixed spool probably easier to begin with, but multiplier is more sturdy. If boat fishing, don't get a rod that's too long - it will just get in the way.

I use cheapo telescopic rods because they are easy to stow and carry around. Fine for mackerel, bass, fishing off the boat or rocks. The tatty components like to rust, so they don't have a long life, but £20 every 2 or 3 years isn't much for a rod and reel.

Try a cheap set-up for a while until you know what you want - stowing the rod aboard may be the most important criterion in many cases.

I believe that there are Salmon in the Tamar, but there is a restriction to the season. I think you cannot take fist until August and you might need a Salmon license.
