Hi,

Feel free to call me a tight git, but I wondered if anyone knows of a money-saving source for charts and pilot books (and other publications). I have a few omissions from my local charts, and there are some other areas that I could do with - its surprising how much it all adds up.

My own rummaging suggests that you can save a few quid, only to have it blown away in postage charges. For example www.chartsales.co.uk save four quid on a SC folio, then pay £8.30 postage. Doesn't make a lot of sense.

Ta in advance, Tony S

Where are you going Tony? I've only got about 12-15 charts which cover me all the way from the Tay to Wick.

I just go into Thomas Gunn in Aberdeen and buy a new one as required, then keep them up to date from the UKHO website.

I would have to buy more if I was going further afield of course.

If you pick up a Tsunami 99 CD Rom You get a limitless supplies of charts for your PC, but they are well out-of-date, still in my cheapskate opinion worth the tenner I paid. I do use Stamfords for my local area - not into all the electronic wizardry.

We're planning a trip to the West Coast this summer (through the Canal). That's "uncharted" territory for me, but it looks quite well covered by the Admiralty Leisure series. Once you add one or more pilot books it comes to a reasonable sum of money.

But if there are no significant savings to be made by mail-order I could probably order from the chandlery at the boatyard. Or as you say I'd expect everything to be in stock at Thomas Gunn, if I happen to be in the City.

Just for info, I was after a Leisure Folio for the Clyde last weekend and both local chandlers had none on display. Turns out a new issue is due out end of Feb and they had taken the old ones off the shelf so that people didn't buy them and then find the new one available 3 or 4 weeks later. I was quite impressed.

When I brought Rowana back from the Clyde, Sgeir was kind enough to loan me his charts of the west coast, so I don't have any myself that you could borrow.

I do have Imray chart C65 - Crinan to Mallaig and Barra, that you are welcome to borrow. It's the 1999 edition, so not the latest, although I have tried to keep it up to date from their website. Still OK for a bit of forward planning though.

I also bought Admirality chart 1791 of the Cale canal, although the bumff I was given from the canal people at Corpach was perfectly adequate.

If you want to borrow either of these, send me a PM. I'm not going over to the west coast this year, so won't be needing them for a while.

Hi Gandy, do what I and hundreds of others do , borrow the charts you need and find a buisness where you can get them photo copied (yes there are machines that large) and to hell with copyright.

You don't need charts for the canal, but look out for the 'deliberate' scale mistake in the British Waterways pack that has Loch Ness at only 10 miles!
