I am finding most stuff very expensive here yet I remember someone saying solar panels were cheap (which I need desparately), Is there a way of getting stuff at UK prices, 2x the price is irritating!

We have just returned to the UK from Portugal. It's not good news on the chandlery front.

The best and cheapest places to buy are from the fishermans shop usually located in a 'garage' or lean-to type shed somewhere in the commercial docks.

For yacht chandlery to my knowledge, no-where in Portugal holds any stock and most things larger than a shackle have to be 'ordered in' from elsehere and tend to be more expensive. You could try using some of the French online sites as these seem to be cheaper.

What part of Portugal are you in? In LAGOS 'Blue water Yacht Services' can get most things. While in Villamoura 'Peter Heitmann' is a good local source. In other places you just have to take pot luck.

I agree! about chandlerys ib portugal, and about Blue water. Solar panels are cheap in Ibiza, funnily enough! Theres lots of competition and they were cheaper than UK anyway, go down and shop around and haggle! I bought 120 watts worth at 24 volts, (four of them). not telling, do your own haggleing!!

For solar panels try Fritz Wagner at F F Sistemas de Energias Alternativas, Sitio de Palheirinho, 8670-130 Aljezur, Portugal - phone 282 998 745, fax 282 131 7500.

For other chandlery items try Bellamar SL, Avda. Padre Mirabent, Isla Christina, Spain - tel 959 33 24 51. Pepe has some English, but tries to hide.

I'm surprised you can find ANYTHING as expensive as the UK (except electronic gear) unless you have the misfortune to be in Gib.

Oil sucker, 15E in France, 28E Portugal ...

It is cheaper to buy mail order and ship to Spain than buy in local chandlers. Either that or get someone to hand carry. I have been doing this for years for high dollar items. Dont know about Portugal. Contrary to previous post, I have found Sheppards in Gibraltar to be very competitive (no VAT) for most things. If you go to local fisherman type chandlers then you can get rope, fenders, chain, anti fouling etc at reasonable rates but if you dont speak Spanish or have someone with you who can, it will probably be difficult.
Bottom line, UK is cheaper and USA cheaper still.

As Charles said, most items should be cheaper than in UK except electrical/electronic. Stay away from marina's with lots of Bitish/French/German boats and the prices will be a lot lower than UK: Sikaflex for £5 a tube, 2pack paint for £12 as against £30 in UK for exactly same product.

UK firms are keen to send by post and work out cheaper and items usually arrive within four days.

France is, now, the second largest boating market in the world (next to the USA) - which makes it one of the cheapest places to buy - except for Yanmar spares.

I'd agree about the value for money in France, except electronics which are still cheaper in UK than on continental Europe - but most other boating things are far more pricey in UK.

Example 50m 8mm chain from Bellamar 140E, 50m 8mm chain from Sheppards (duty free) £158.

The Spanish charts are similar in price to Admiralty but nothing like as accurate - US charts are probably the best value for money.
I tend to use electronic charts except for route-planning - they're the most economic in both space and cost of all.

Where are all these cheap chandlers? Having been up and down the Spanish coast from Barcelona to Gibraltar I havent found any. Spanish friends of ours order major items from West Marine, pay IVA (sometimes!!!!) and its still cheaper.
