I learnt to sail on Derwent reservoir (just outside of Hexham) back in the late seventies, early eighties. Having checked with my father that it wasn't my distorted childhood memories he agreed that is a superbly friendly and laid back club with a high standard of racing for those who wanted it and all for a fairly low annual membership (I suppose £300 at todays prices).

Do these places still exist and if so can anyone recommend one near Manchester or the lake district. I am thinking along the lines of an Enterprise (dinghy not starship) to ease the kids into it rather than anything too radical and skifflike?

Russel, most of the smaller clubs in the North are well under the £300 mentioned. My club, up in the Dales at Skipton is less than a third of that and a brilliantly friendly place that accommodates class champions and total novices with equal good nature.

You should have no problems at all finding one.

BTW, I don't know how old the kids are but don't dismiss boats like the RS Feva out of hand. With youngsters today sailing something modern can add a lot to the attraction and may help rather than hinder in the attempt to get them hooked on sailing.

Good luck with it all, anyway.
