I want nautical charts on a smart phone and for various reasons I'd like to avoid the iPhone which rules out the excellent Navionics App. Is there any way to get marine charts for smart phones other than the iPhone?

It's not clear that there's a specific app for Android or Symbian but is there a cunning way round that? (Or is there an app?)

For instance is there a an online web based chart solution that could be accessed from any web browser, including a smart phone?

Are there charts downloadable as jpegs?

Might there be some kind of marine chart add on/overlay for google earth?

No need for 'chart plotter' capability - I just want to view charts when the mood takes me.

If all else fails I'm seriously tempted to just photograph paper charts.

I'm currently using a 5800 - I would willingly change phones, but would still prefer to avoid the iPhone.

I have just had my Orange upgrade, I chose the HTC Touch 3g cause it runs windows, I have Maptech charts on my lappie and can port them to memory map on my HTC, it works a treat. The internal GPS on the HTC interfaces seemlessly.

Many thanks, that's exactly the kind of solution I'm looking for. Will investigate.
Belkin Tidetables also ports to the phone so I can check tides anywhere at the flick of a finger, plus I also bought route66 which turns the phone in to a satnav. As you can tell I am well impressed

Why do you want to avoid an iPhone?

I have a 5800 and am delighted with it. I would have liked an iPhone, but I dont want to pay £35 per month, and I want to be able to use my phone to get mobile broadband on my netbook.... O2 forbid tethering unless you pay another £10, (I think), per month.

Waiting to see what the Orange and Vodafone offers are when they release the iPhone.
