Having discovered that my great great uncle, John Walker, had managed land on Shetland (and made himself extremely unpopular by evicting tenants and perhaps even pocketing other people's money) I have developed a burning desire to visit the islands. But the Admiralty charts necessary for a trip from Inverness to the islands and back to familiar waters via Stornaway would cost the best part of 400 quid. I've tried googling for second-hand charts without success.

Any suggestions?

Imray charts at about £15 a shot, you may need six of them.
Details from Cyde Cruising Club or Martin Lawrence pilot books, plus an Almanac.
Even better combined with a chartplotter

Or ebay, for 2nd hand admiralty charts if you can live with charts that are not usually WGS84
Prices range from about a pound but I did see a second hand one go for £14 the other day.

I'm trying to collect the charts to get me from the West coast to the Forth. Not paying more than £5 a shot, but beware few are WGS84

Good luck

Did you find Marine Chart Services ?

They seem to have a few charts that might be of use to you. I bought some cancelled charts of the Irish Sea from them a few years ago. Most had depth in metres, but not WGS84 datum. One was in fathoms(!). Usable for passage planning, though.

Their North Sea section covers Orkney & Shetland.

The prices are at the top of the page: £3.15 for cancelled charts, but the offer 2nd hand & corrected 2nd hand ones too.

I buy most of my charts from the boat jumbles in Plymouth and in Falmouth. We have one in April and one in May (There is also one in Newton Abbott in September).

The charts on offer vary in age from a few years to perhaps 25 years, but the prices are rarely more than £2.50 and sometimes only £1. I should have bought a bundle of about 50 for perhaps £15 last year, but (having a list of those I was looking for) I didn't think about it 'til later.

Sellers want to clear their attics and generally are happy to accept a nominal price rather than having to take everything home again and wait another year.

You can look on the Boat Jumble Association website http://www.boatjumbleassociation.co.uk/ to find out when there is a boat jumble near you.

If you are "over the border", I see that Irvine has two, one in May and one in September.

Meanwhile, a passage chart and a pilot book would be enough for planning at this stage. You can get those at the boat jumble too, but I expect you may be keen to start planning before the first boatjumble in your area.

Good hunting!

I'm planning a trip to Shetland this summer and tried to get an Imray chart for the Shetlands (like the one they do for the Orkneys) when I was down at the boat show and was told they dont do one. Admiralty ones would seem the only option unless i've missed something.
