I have been asked by a member of the Open CPN developer community to help spread the word that official Hydrographic Office vector charts are now available for Open CPN. This has already been announced on the Practical Boat Owner forum but there is also interest in Open CPN on this forum as well so I thought it would be worth repeating it here.
Charts are available now for UK, Ireland, Germany, Netherlands & Belgium, Spain, Croatia and Iceland. France will be the next area. I believe that worldwide coverage is the eventual aim.
This is a huge step forward for Open CPN and it makes me wonder how long it will be before publishers like Navionics decide to make their products available to Open CPN users.
Details are here: http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f134/up-to-date-vector-charts-for-opencpn-oesenc-181733.html

I wish that someone at CPN or Cruisers Forum would write some proper clear instructions on how to buy them, create a security login/footprint, and activate them.

I have bought the UK maps but I'm still struggling with how to get them onto my boat laptop.

Sarabande - I saw your post on the Practical Boat Owner forum and I know others are having problems too. I did wonder if I ought to delay mentioning this but Hubert (bcn) on Cruisers Forum asked me to spread the message and I didn't like to refuse.
I will come back here when I have either found out how to do this myself or seen clear instructions elsewhere.
I still think this is a big step forward.

Having spent a large chunk of my life writing instructions on what to do if an atomic bomb falls on you, I still find those pages less than intuitive.

H O W E V E R many thanks GHA. I am now back from several hours on a hot tractor and a couple of hours felling a big tree, so my mind will be rested and ready to do battle with the instructions tonight.

Ta !
