We are sailing our 29' sailing yacht from from the Solent to Milford Haven and onto Pwllheli next May. It will be the first time we have gone beyond Falmouth and I am wondering what charts to get for Lands End to Milford Haven. Imray C series seem to have inset charts over the bits of Bristol Channel approaches that we would cross.
Any suggestions please?

Personally I prefer Imray charts. If you've already got as far as Falmouth, you may have Folio 2400, which takes you from Dartmouth round Lands End to Padstow, inc the Isles of Scilly. I would add Folio 2600, Bristol channel, and you're sorted.

There's a good chart selector on Bookharbour:

My Imray C series chart ( I did not have a chart plotter) was of such a scale that Newlyn was not shown. ( forget Number) So when I got to Newlyn ( By aiming a bit north of Penzance) I went to the roughest pub I could find to ask a couple of fishermen for advice on the inshore route round lands end. I will not relate the problem with a drunk threatening to throw me out on the first night, but on the second night i was introduced to 2 local fishermen.
First question
So what is the tactic for handling the tide through there?
Reply- "Hell mate I have been fishing here 30 years & i still have not sussed out where the tide runs round there."
Second question
So how can I find my way through the inshore route? Any tips please?
"Yeah, If you see a rock , don't hit it, otherwise you are Ok"
Because I had helped a guy with a catamaran the day earlier, he presented me with a 10 year old chart of the passage, just as I was leaving. The fisherman's advice was actually quite good, because the rocks close inshore stick straight out of the water & it is deep water next to them. So by not hitting the rocks that I could see, I was Ok. The chart did give me a bit of confidence though, as rocks do not move much over 10 years.but I did not even have it second time round, It is not worth going the long way round outside the LH. Reeds gives the tidal info in enough detail for the area.
I do not know the Imray No. but you do not need a very detailed chart to do the trip. The Bristol Channel is just a bit of open water. Milford Haven is up a buoyed channel & Reeds gives info on the marina & lock & tidal info
I first went in 2012, again in 2014 & am planning my third SH trip next year. Each time will be Newlyn to Milford Haven, Then MH to Dunlaghaire.

I've found the Admiralty Folio charts excellent, they are a compact size for the chart table and have inserts covering the various ports on route, these plus the Irish Sea Pilot and you will be well away.
