Oh john, most people get some form of benefit from their work, just wondered if you get free charts, or at a very redused price. Hmmm. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

are the US people I use - the 2/3rds size is best as US full size are even bigger than BA charts....
As you will see they sell entire folio's or single charts - because I needed so many I purchased the Chart Book - in Beaufort Carolina and after that just ordered what I needed exactly.
CATCH 22 - they will not supply UK waters as the BA have protected their 'copyright' and will prosecute anyone selling US charts of UK waters...
I think you will find 90% of long distant cruising folks use these photocopies which are made on good paper - When you get to Australia in Darwin there is a well known copy-shop which will supply all the charts photocopies you need from there to the Med.
thanks Eloise, just what I and many other people wanted.
Talking free trade, braking news today on tv. Under the free trade agreement between Australia and the USA, people can now import one carton of cigs duty free, so someone started to sell them on the internet. The price of a carton is 1/3 of the price of the shelf price. Wonder how long it will take for the government to crack down on that one.One wonder just what free trade really means. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Just found another 5 cents worht. If the UKHO can stop the private importation of charts, it surely can not be private enterprise, as they claim, against everyhing our governments is working towards. Why protect such a small group, when others turning over much more money can do as the like, just doesn't make any sense. And does the UKHO not use FREE GPS to help them do the job a lot easier, the Americans are saving the UKHO millions, and what do you get in return, a kick in the ass. It smells so badly, I can't even write it.
The best we can do is to not let it rest, but keep pushing, till we get justice, equal treatment as everybody else in the private sector. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Hopefully most people will see what nonsense some people write on this topic, however the jibes about GPS and who pays for data are so completely off the mark that I have to point out what is not obvious.
Firstly the RN contributes data - but is no where near the only source of data for UKHO - even in home waters. I don't see any reason to enlarge on the commercial practice of the UKHO. Its not my part of ship. Its not my responsibility. I don't have to justify it either! If you don't like the pricing policy I may or may not agree - but I hope you will also see that from my position I cannot comment. What I have tried to explain is why the best collection of data in the world isn't free.
The comments on GPS just make me laugh.
Firstly the only way the system was approved by congress (if I remember correctly) was if it was made free and publically available.
Secondly - yes the US allow us to use it in survey work. Guess who benefits? What data do you think they use? You work it out....
And for those who make cheap jibes, no I don't get free or discount charts.
