Thanks to veryone who responded to my previous post with reference to chartplotters.

Having looked at many plotters during the boatshow I have decided I want Navionics charts and have narrowed it down to either the Lowrance 6500c (or its replacement the 7200c) or the Raymarine A65.

Now to me the Lowrance has the edge. It looks more solid and accepts two cards so that you can preplan on a pc but when I went to a couple of chandleries to buy they both told me that the Raymarine was far superior in build and reliability and that the Lowrance was a budget brand. Is this really the case?

With the LIBS discounts, the prices are within £50 of each other.

Your words of wisdom will be much appreciated.

Erm, it says the A65 up there ^

My suggestion is to check wether you can connect a PC to the Chartplotter in order to simulate/plan on the PC and then save the data on the cartridge. BE SURE to have a techie actually demonstrate you what is possible and with which hardware: the sales staff usually know far less than the average user and have no idea on how to interface the parts of a system.
Cheers

Here we go again.
I work on the principle that my boat can have anything it wants. All my instrumentation is Raymarine ST60, but the chartplotter is a Lowrance 3500C. Best for you to look at as many plotters as you can. For me Lowrance is best. I think that as far as chartplotters go Raymarine have lost the, er plot.

Dylan - quite agree. I have all Raymarine ST50 instruments but replaced an old Raymarine mono chartplotter with a Navman 5500 in the cockpit. Very happy bunny now.
