Starting to look at chartplotters and the choice is mind - numbing !

can I use my car satnav with a marine sd charts in it ?

I dont really need all the fancy functions in them , just basic on deck nav .
the Yeoman does very well but we have no Aegean charts ,for this summers cruise
and so I am thinking about going with a chartplotter as well with the relative east med electronic SD chart

is it possible to use the car unit ?

It depends on the format of the charts and the operating system of the unit. If the plotter the charts are for are made by the same company as the car satnav then you might be able to use them, however I suspect that they will not for the most part be interchangeable.

Have you considered a laptop based system instead of a dedicated chart plotter?

Yes I do have a laptop with some charts on it but its inside next to the yemoan, and its the outdoor aspect that
is the interest and the lappy is unreadable in sunlight , hence the thoughts on an outside mounted plotter ( Garmin )
I will look on their website and check compatability, thanks .

Garmin Bluecharts seem to work in all Garmin satnavs I've tried them in - but no guarantee, I'm afraid. Garmin pre-sales support seem to be pretty helpful, so give them a ring and ask.

The rest of the marine world seems to use Navionics and I'm not aware of any car satnav that can read them.

May I suggest a Montana?

I have the Oregon and have always been tempted to upgrade...

What about a smartphone app? I have iSailor on my iphone which I use as a backup. Never used it on my boat, but had fun on the Thames Clipper recently, watching our progress down river, so I know it works. I think the app was free (or very cheap) but one has to buy charts for it.

Depends which car unit. Garmin make several that can take both marine charts and road maps.

It is an excellent little unit. However it does not take the current g2 series charts, so you are stuck with three years old ones.

Are you sure? I think I've seen a G2 working in mine... It was a bit slow and the G2 features didn't work, but the basic charting seemed to work.

Yes, sorry, you are right. I just bought a Garmin 78 because the screen is just a bit larger, and more compatible with the bifocals... When ordering, I haven't seen the Etrex Vista HCX among the 'compatible devices' for G2 on the Garmin website, so I assumed it would be incompatible. But I tried it just now, and it indeed works, albeit without the extra features that the 78 comes up with. It wasn't easy to evaluate, because it is in night mode just now. Thank you for pointing this out! Humble apologies.
