I would like to buy a chartplotter; the Standard Horizon CP180 or CP300 appear to be good. Has anyone got one of these?. Are they any good? What alternative?

I bought a CP180 a few months ago and I am really pleased with it. However I think the screen is too small for route planning purposes so I also, subsequently, got a charting program (Sailcruiser) for my PC which also uses C-Map charts and can act as a second navigation system with its own separate GPS input.

It may be that the CP300 is big enough to solve this problem. I suggest you spend a bit of time trying both side by side if you have the opportunity. For example, can you easily create a route across the Irish Sea or the English Channel.

My CP180 has the internal GPS antenna and I have mounted it on a small piece of plywood so I can move it around and it won't fall over in rough weather. I also have it connected to a NASA AIS engine and I have wired my boat so I can plug in the CP180 outdoors or indoors.

Bought the CP300 at Southampton with fishfinder and AIS. I also bought the standard horizon VHF which integrates both ways with it. They are doing a deal at the show where you get a CMAP cartridge with the whole of the UK on it as well.

Certainly was my frontrunner, followed by Northstar(Navman). Apparently the clash of brands with Northstar/Navman both within the Navico group is likely to go to Northstar. This came from one of the dealers.
