I cannot flush fit my new Garmin 750 plotter so it will be mounted on a bracket by the wheel. I will take it in the boat when it is not in use but it does not look a good idea to keep connecting and disconnecting the 19 pin gold plated pin connector at the back of the plotter as the pins could get bent and cause problems. What I plan to do is fit an intermediate plug on the lead and hard wire in the socket for the plug to the bulkhead. Something like this 10 pin connector looks pretty robust and would be ideal.

My only concern is whether the quality of connection will be good enough. Any wise words on this?

I used a plug very similar to that one (clearly the same range, but with an inline socket rather than a panel-mount one) for the control conductors in my radar cable. Not a bad plug, but not remotely waterproof. I see yours does say "waterproof" in the URL, but I suspect that only refers to the add-on rubber cover when the plug is removed, and even then more "water resistant" than "waterproof".

I think you are looking for a solution to a problem that doesn't exist, the connections will be fine provided you always remember to use the covers on both bare ends when you remove them and give them an occasional spray with switch cleaner/lubricant.
