Thinking of a garmin 750 or SH 300i. As these are both not the latest product is it to be expected that they will be further discounted or have the prices bottomed out and may go up. For next season now so buy now or wait-any ideas?

Just got my garmin 750 from marinechandlery.com good service, good price with mapping. Good kit

Benefits of the Garmin 751 are at best marginal. I've had the 750 for 2 seasons and it's the mutts nutts. So if you can get it for around £600 go for it.

I am also looking at these two but was deterred from the Garmin by comments about the touch screen being tricky to use in a bouncing sea ?

The S/Horizon and Lowrance 7" plotters look good as they still use buttons , also cheaper
Any G 75 users care to comment on ease of use , please ?

I've had a G750 for 3.5 years, just after they came out. It doesn't get as much use as I would like as I'm out of the country most of the time, about 3 weeks and 6 or so weekends each year. I've been really pleased with it although I know i only use a fraction of its capabilities. Easy to see in all conditions including sun. Easy to use in rough weather. I had misgivings about the touch screen before buying it but no problems whatsoever in practice. Only regret is that I didn't get it for £600!

The SH price does not include charts-when you add the charts SH is approx £700 (cheapest bundled price) and Garmin is currently £595.

I stupidly bought a chartplotter in November as a Christmas present after looking a a demo model in an indoor showroom - it was April/May before it was fitted and used in real life, and rather late to take it back saying I did not think much of the screen brightness in sunlight.

Interesting - can I ask what make it was?

If you buy it now the guarantee period will start ticking away. Might be worth trying to negotiate an extended warranty (together with the end of season discount)

I started with a Lowrance HDS5M - screen failed after 2 months. Replaced under warranty and upgraded to HDS7M, but then found it would not talk in and out on the single comms channel to VHF for DSC position data out and AIS Data from the VHF (with built in AIS engine) in at the same time. Support from Lowrance was a joke. So it went back and I bought the Garmin GPSMAP750.

Force Four were excellent throughout this saga.

I have a SH 300i and very happy with it, (£519.94 from here http://www.marinechandlery.com/standard-horizon-cp300i-internal-ant-plotter) very user friendly with good after sales back up from SH, use it in conjunction with my SH GX 2100e VHF Radio for AIS display.

One other point, I have always had an aerial for my plotters but this one is the first with 'in built' aerial, I have found no differance in quality or reception which is very good.

Garmin 3005C - now well obsolete, but at the time it was a much more expensive one than the Standard Horizon or Lowrance equivalents. Looked good in the showroom though. Also as well as being not very bright they are not actually very waterproof either. Mine has been factory exchanged after draining an eggcupfull of water out from inside after opening the back when it stopped working. The replacement mists up internally but is still working (after the mist clears once it's been on for an hour or two).
