just thought i would post a few things that i have learnt since chartering a yacht in menorca last week. These might be useful for anyone contemplating doing the same. apologies if some appear obvious or if similar postings have appeared before
1) there is coding and there is coding! Spanish codes, i was informed after chartering, do not include the following - a safety line, automatic life jackets, grab bag, Mob kit
2) take your own navigational and chart equipment. They supplied a plotter that I amused myself with the whole week but failed to use constructively! Nothing similar to British versions.
3) similar experience with hand bearing compass - so take your own.
4) Company felt clientele needed only GPS. charts provided were limited and inadequate. If you can get them take your own.
5)Be prepared for basic instrumentation that you rely on to not work or to be faulty. Wind speed and direction did not work and this was not seen as significant. On two days the wind ranged from 22 knots to 38 knots ( this I was told later!, although I clearly was aware of the difference as it happpened) I asked another company in Mahon about their yachts and they conceded that 3 of their yachts had instruments that did not work.
I chartered via the internet and have learnt that i need to be far more thorough in communicating with the company and ensuring that my needs are met.
