Hi everyone,

I plan to operate a very special 60ft steel cutter on charter trips in the Med and then the British Isles, Norway and perhaps even more. The idea is to "keep going", never staying in one spot, or country more than 2-4 weeks. The vessel will be British registered and MCA coded.
Now, I've been following previous threads regarding various chartering issues, including MCA coding, problematic procedures in Greece, Croatia & spain and other related matters, and although it was all very helpful, there is one more thing I'd appreciate your advice on: Considering my plan, should I still go through all the hassle of getting the boat Commercial in each and every country I pass through? what about all the taxing issues that have been raised here before?

Any help will be mostly appreciated!

My first thought is how are you going to get clients if you are never in one place for more than a couple of weeks?

Much too complicated to even begin to answer it! Suggest that if you have to ask such a big question here you should not be considering going into the business!

However, just a couple of general observations. Most countries have specific requirements both in terms of operating a business and operating a boat commercially from their territory. So in general terms you may need to comply in every country. Suspect that each country will also have its own definition for "operating from" to determine whether you have to meet their requirements or not. I know in Greece you can operate under a UK registration, but you still require a Greek Charter Licence and comply with their coding.

Many boats operate charters from the UK but visit other countries without any problems, but probably because their charters start in the UK or are sold in the UK.

You may well find it useful to talk to MCA and RYA for some guidance.
