Chartering in Marmaris

The weather this year has seen SWMBO put her pretty little feet down and she has flatly refused to crew for me.

As most of my old chums are - well - old, reasonably decrepit and three sheets to the wind as a result of Brown/Darling and co, I have not had much luck getting out on the water this season.

However, joy of joys, SWMBO has decided that a week in a luxury hotel in the early October warmth of Marmaris might - just might - persuade her to spend a couple of days or three enjoying the scenery from afloat.

So my question, what are the chances of chartering from Marmaris on a daily basis? Any contact details and thoughts about what can be done in a 3 day sail radius are welcome.

For luxury near Marmaris try a hotel called Dionysos, which is perched on a mountainside above Kumlubuk bay. We have stayed there twice and SWMBO loves it. They used to have yacht with skipper, who took guests on day trips, but I am not sure if they still have it. They also have a MOBO called Cheers for Life, used for luxury days out, and a Gulet also used for day trips.
As for three day charters, most charter companies will only charter on a weekly basis if you pre book, usually Saturday to Saturday. However if you turn up on Monday and they have yachts standing idle you should be able to do a deal.

From Marmaris Ciftlik and return is an easy day sail, Three days is a bit awkward, but Marmaris to Loryma (a fabulous bay with three restaurants, and a stunning Greek fortress ruin guarding the entrance), a day sail to have lunch in Sogut, Bozburun or one of the bays on the south side of Hisoronu Korfesi, returning to Loryma overnight, and then back to Marmaris is quite feasible, if there is enough wind.

Dionysos now has two boats: one traditional gulet and one big new Hanse Yacht, looks like 50ft. The gulet is with skipper only, don't know about the Hanse.

Don't think the Dionysos boats are available for charter - rather as one-day skippered outings for hotel guests as part of their holiday package. However Lady Jessie is probably more up to date than me, so you could try e-mailing the dionysos (dionysos@efes.net.tr) to check. The owners are Rim & Ahmet Senol.

Also I think any booking at the Dionysos is now linked to the availability of flights from the UK (via Exclusive Escapes) and is liable to be for a minimum of 7 days. However the hotel is a great chill-out, and a real stunner if you do manage to get there - including the largest selection of good single malts I've seen outside Scotland!

Don't know of the availability of short term charter boats at Marmaris, but you could try asking somebody like Sunbird (Yacht Sales) for information (sunbirdmarmaris@superonline.com). One guy we dealt with there when we were looking to buy, is Peter Casalis de Pury - a helpful gent.
