Hi All
I am thinking of chartering a yacht in Greece in the first half of
August. Dont have that much experiance so would welcome the forums input. Pos + Neg feedback please as this would be my first charter and dont want it to go wrong.

Keep to the big companies, do not under any circumstances get yourself into any situation where you need outside assistance, take lots of sun lotion, and above all, go into Santorini at sunrise, from the North, playing anything by Pavarotti as loud as you can. Breathtaking.

Depends where in Greece. Had a good charter from Sailionian a couple of years ago, they do assisted charter if you would like a skipper for a day or so, they park you up & the skipper gets picked up.

Worst or best part, depending on your point of view, is that most of Italy seem to spend the whole of August screaming round Greece in mobos, or just screaming. bit like being on the M25 in rush hour, but you get used to it.
Get parked up early, get the drinks on deck & watch the mayhem.
fantastic place for a sailing holiday, so much so, I am off again 1st half of august, might see you there !

Greece is the best place for sailing, and the Greeks are the best; well, I am a bit bias, after all, I am Greek. Find out about the local weather, September/October can be rough in the Agean

If you are not too experienced I would stick to the Ionian. Easy to get to with flights to Preveza.Have a look at Skorpios Charter based in Nidri --- small , with about 10 v well equipped yachts very friendly little charterters who have been around longer than most.
and good prices. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Please bear in mind that it reached 46c in August last year! It is a very busy time, it may mean that you have to enter a harbour early in order to get a decent place. Also the afternoon breeze will be at its strongest in August, which can make berthing entertaining (well it entertains me watching from a bar) You will enjoy the Ionian.

First, choose an area to suit your experience.

Light wind areas (Inland Ionian, Saronic) will be very crowded in July and August, and you'll be motoring a lot. Find a berth early in the day.

Moderate wind areas (E Peloponese, S Peloponese, N Aegean/W Sporades) will be less crowded in high season, excepting N Ionian, which bears the full brunt of the Italian invasion.

The Aegean and Dodecenese will be very windy for periods, so only go there if you're confident in bigger winds. The Dodecanese (charter from Kos, Rhodes or Samos) are largely sheltered from waves, but the Aegean (charter from Athens, Lavrion, Paros, Naxos) isn't, so it's not for the seasick prone, and you'll need a 36ft plus boat. Great area though!

There's lots more about the various areas on my website.

Once you've selected an area, then search for a charterer. There are lots of little companies (in the Ionian, many run by British ex-pats) which are good value for money. Also, 'Sailing Holidays' in the N Ionian and Inland Ionian do good value bare boat charter, with excellent support.

In the windier areas (Aegean), where support is more difficult, you're better off with a big company. Kiriakoulis do a good job.

So, once you've sussed where, then work on the 'who with?'

Hi, like 19Shane71 we did our first charter with Sailing Holidays from Fiscardo (Southern Ioinian) late sept last year. First class, really easy going lead boat and flotilla was friendly and good introduction, with wide variety of experience from complete novices upwards.

Enjoy
