It was like this :-
1. Forward water tank overflows into the forepeak bilges both on filling and in any sort of a sea-way. I know this as after the skipper refilled our water tanks I found my shoes floating out to meet me when I opened my cabin door. A design fault apparently!!
2. Anchor light didn't work
3. Radio instructions only in German
4. Navtex, which would have been very very useful in this case, only decided to work when we were 5mls from the end of the trip.
5. Engine overheated, but no warning light or buzzer came on. Buzzer didn't work when tested either. Engine had been repaired by the local V**** agent the week before our charter.
6. Wind direction indicator instuments were nowhere near accurate.
7. Masthead wind indicator fell off into the sea on day 7.
8. Electric bilge pump ran but didn't pump.
9. There was no manual bilge pump handle on the boat - made one up from socket extensions in tool box. In the light of what happened it was a good job there was a tool kit.
10. Forecabin hatch leaked.
11. Fuel tank was not full as suggested at the start of the charter.
12. Boat sailed very sluggishly - bottom looked very dirty.

OK, this was quite an old boat - commisioned as long ago as 2001 !!!
It was 42ft long and the makers name begins with B

I appreciate that some of these things - 2,3,4,9 & 11 - should have been checked by us prior to departure but at this rate they will have to do a complete rebuild after about 5 years.

Re: item 8

having rented boats in hot sun rather than a raging gale, i bet there's a switch/valve to make the bilge pump from the bottom of the galley fridgebox which otherwise turns into a worryingly swimming pool OR from the actual bilges.

Nonetheless, whisper evidently had a fabulous week. Oh yes he did!
