Taking the family to Australia for a couple of weeks at Easter time. We are going to Adelaide for a week and a half and the Sydney for a week. I thought that rather than wasting money on a holiday appartment we might try to hire a floating home for a few days. Any one have any ideas about charter near either place?

Other than a Yachtmaster Theory I have no formal qualifications, just a lifetime experience mainly, but not exclusively, in small traditional boats. Will this be a problem?

thanks

Robbie

Dear Robbie
I chartered for a day in Sydney harbour and a week in the Whitsundays some years ago. In the Whitsundays they seemed to be willing to charter to anyone; the company sent you out with one of their staff for an hour and if s/he judged you likely to bring the boat back more or less undamaged off you went. Can't remember what was expected in Sydney but I think they were similarly relaxed about formal qualifications.

hi when you get to sydney you might get something round there there are lots of hire places for house boats and yatch you could try the mooringsover here ive only got the whitsunday one but thats a start. www.moorings.com.au .we dont have to have qualifcation to drive a house bout as far as i no we dont on the gold coast anyway as we have hired many a time and you just have a run though with the hire bod .. hope this helps dave

You will not be required to hold any formal qualifications, however do not book this through any UK based operation i.e. Sunsail as you will be charged UK prices not Oz prices and trust me there is a big difference.

Lots of choices in the Whitsundays. You can hire a house boat on the Murray River out of Adelaide, or look at Bayswater north of Sydney.

hi again forgot to tell you how to get info you want off these sites . the one you want is the travel one when it opens go to map top left corner hit the state you want scroll down page till you get to accomada tion then you should be ok just hit any state for what you want dave

I chartered in the WHitsundays twenty years ago. Wonderful place to sail.

If you can't get a boat in Sydney, I strongly recommend staying in Manly (ideally overlooking the beach but away from the Corso cos it's a bit noisy). Less frenetic than the City but only half an hour from Circular Quay, via one of the most spectacular ferry rides in the world.

Particularly recommended if you have kids. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Adelaide seaside has a very open seafront and not many places for shelter. There are sailing clubs and a marina or two but I couldn't find any opportunities for liveaboard.

Sydney has 2 main sailing/cruising grounds - Sydney Harbour and Pittwater/Kuringai Chase Nationa Park. The latter has much more variety than the harbour but is about 30km Nth of the City and would not be convenient if you need to do business some of the time.

Take a look at these sites:
Eastsail
Pacific Sailing School
Pittwater

As others have said, the Whitsundays is a brilliant area to sail (Central Queensland Coast). Try these:

QYC
Cumberland
CYA
