Well the East Coast is now our oyster, having received our chart pack.

Only set back is now there is a lot of updating to do /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

As I haven't done any updates before, I would like to ask the esteemed locals how you go about updating yours, hints, tips and tricks as I obviously now don't want to ruin them.

Thank you in advance.

Gary.

You need to find a pen that will write on the charts without smudging - sometimes only a biro seems to work on waterproofed paper.

I use Imray charts and the updates are on their website and I get an automatic update from Reeds with monthly updates. I expect other makes do the same.

To be honest I am selective about what I alter - if they have just changed a buoy topmark or the depth of water somewhere I don't go then I don't bother.

It's a boaty thing to do when you're not boating /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif if you remember to bring the charts home!

MS, its the Imray chart pack that I have got. I was contemplating one of those fine 0.5mm waterproof/indelible type of pens.

What colour do you make your amendments.

I thought I would get all the charts upto date as much as possible before we go a wandering.

I'm in the transitional stage between Imray(plasticised) and Admiralty, so I'm a bit forgetful about what is permanent on one and smudges on the other-sorry, no help at all in that respect.

What I can agree with is that in this area you will be told of dozens of chart corrections over a season but so many are for commercial shipping. You must be selective about what will really affect your craft and ignore the rest, otherwise you will struggle to understand it when the chips are down

Thanks Gin,

Having not ventured far from home base, there are currently no changes that would affect us.

This being the case I am unsure except for the obvious of a bouy/mark has been moved to a different location, of what may or may not be relevant.

We don't currently plan any night sailing, so I think that maybe the number of flashes on a bouy/mark would not necessarily be of importance.?

That rings a bell from what I can remember from a previous thread up there in the north of the forum.

I know this is going to be a stupid question, but if violet is the choice of colour so that it shows up in red light, why are the charts original features not maked up in this colour.

I take the updates from the WEB and print them and then file them in a ring binder which I keep on board. From these I update the charts using a fine red ball point and put a tick alongside each correction as it has been made on the chart.
I can always refer back to the printed list if there is any doubt about my marks on the chart.

You have to be aware of what will affect you...

thus (assume typical yacht drawing 1-2m)

depth in a channel reduced from 15m to 13m - who cares - no need to update...

depth over a bar or spitway reducing from 3m to 2m - better update your chart

similarly no need to plot a new wreck that always has 6m clearance over it - definitely plot it if it only has 2m over it!

you'll get the feel for what's important as time passes!
