Hi I am thinking of taking the plunge and getting a chart plotter, as opposed to the Garmin gps 72 I have been using. on acount of the garmin not working any more, ( underwater for a week) seems that the standard horizon ones seem v popul;ar and have a good write up. I understand that these run on c chart. can someone fill me in on the chart prices, and what packages are available. Also it seems that the charts come on a compact flash cartridge, but it seems that you still need a special reader to get the chart on the pc at home. Why??? feels like a rip off to me. please advise on other options or good deals that are around at the moment and also pro's and cons of the various types of chart available. does anyone have a garmin gps 72 to sell?

The selection of chart types is the key issue and I would advise asking fellow boaters at your local mariner, each manufacturer has pro and cons and these vary dependant on location.

Regarding the best deals, try our website it allows you to send your request to a number of dealers and they will quote you back within 24 hours. They all know they are competing for your business so hopefully they will be competitive.

The site also allows you to compare chartplotters, all the best and good luck.

If you want to do passage planning at home you can get an extra 12v lead & put a 12v ciggy plug on the end & run it at home off a cheap battpack.I do this with my plotter & a friend with the St.Horizon 300 does the same.
The Standard Horizon plotters often come with a reduced price Megawide chart .

Copy and Paste of an old post that might come in handy. If you decide to dispense with the Garmin 72, can I make you an offer for any associated fittings, cradle/cables you’re done with? Matt
