I've recently noticed that my Stanford's Thames Estuary chart may need updating.
Little things like the Canewdon radar towers are gone, Dengie tramway and Tollesbury Pier gone, can't find West Buxey buoy and there seems to be a new town north of Hullbridge.
It says on the chart that if I send it back to Stanfords they will correct it for 1/6d plus 3d return postage, but are refusing to honour this now.
I don't want to spend money unnecessarily, but is it time to buy a new chart?

1/6d! Yeah Gods and little fishes. To do it for that, that chart must be pretty old. Tell me does it only have one Edinburgh Channel and the Spitway due south of Clacton Pier?

Seriously what date?

Only 1950, but it cost 18/6d so it ought to last!:D
I've also found my 1956 copy of East Coast Rivers. There's a nice picture of Janet & Judy sitting on Daddy's Iwunda. It also tells me that the best place to leave a yacht in Harwich Harbour is in Felixstowe Dock, I must try that!

Unfortunately it's symptomatic of the 'throw away' society. I have a Decca navigator which is also proving very unreliable these days, so much so that I am having to rely more and more on DR and compass bearings for fixes. Philips don't seem interested in trying to repair it....

1956 Edition of ECR is a first edition and worth keeping. Don't throw the Stanford away either. I would welcome that for my collection if you're thinking of getting rid of it.

PM sent.
It's just occurred to me, 18/6d was a big chunk out of a 1950 average weekly wage. I reckon today's equivalent to be about £50, and we complain about yachting costs nowadays.

I've been having trouble getting fixes with my Seafix RDF lately.

However, my fathom chart of Normandy still serves its purpose.

You've got me thinking. If 18/6 was a good part of a weekly wage and 1/6d was the charge for correcting them, - about a twelve. What would be a twelvth of a weekly wage now? Perhaps I should start a chart correction service? :D

I know about the surveying, just thought if it was the same survey then the cost of charts should have fallen much further, also why I should say a big thanks for all the info posted on here for of piste sailing, which is better than bouy hopping, even if it does sometimes allow for some seal watching.
