Hi everyone.
Now this question has bound to have been asked before, but I cant find anything for love nor money, so please bear with me...

I am very nearly on the verge of getting my very own first boat, and Ive been out buying bits and pieces for it. Some of theses bits being charts. Now these are in two Admiralty Leisure Folio's, ST5606 and ST5607. The ST5606 folio was bought a couple of months ago, and Ive just got round to finding out what Chart Corrections need applying to the charts. Now, are these 'Chart Corrections' just another name for the NTM's??, or are these in addition to?? Also, I have just realised that the folio I bought two months or so ago, was edition 5 and two days ago, edition 7 was published. On the Admiralty leisure website, they say the Chart corrections are based on the edition 6 folio, so how does this affect the corrections I have to make to edition 5??

Hope someone can help me. I didnt realise that there would be 87 pages of corrections to do on the ST5606. Should I just source a new folio from the latest publishing date???...

I realise the hindsight is a wonderful thing, but you really should have checked with Admiralty the latest version of each of the folios you were proposing to buy.

If you have got edition 5, and corrections for eddition 6 then there will be a lot of corrections made that you won't have, i.e. updated to edition 6. Unless you can get hold of a copy of them, I don't think the Admiralty website has them, then I'm afraid you are out of luck.

BTW, you might have 87 pages of corrections, but be selective about what you actually need to correct that will have any relevance on your boat, i.e. if a depth of 30m ish has changed a couple of metres, is that really going to affect you??

NTM is another name for chart corrections.

I presume you have got the corrections for the leisure folio as they are different from the normal NTM.

Hope this helps a little.

Hiya JMKent

Yeah, in Hindsight, I wish I had done a bit more revision on the subject. I know from my day skipper days that I need to keep charts updated but it didnt even come to mind about the various versions.*doh*.. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
No, I havent done the corrections for Edition 6. I wasnt able to find them on the admiralty site, so I just thought that the list now available was the list for edition 6 with extra's added for edition 7.. Sounds like Ive just wasted forty Pounds and need to get myself the lasted edition.

I had guessed that I could be selective about what corrections I made. As you say, if something changes that doesnt effect me then why change it.

And yeah, I did get the list of corrections for the Leisure Folio's. I got them Here at Admiralty Leisure

Yep... they're the right ones. So for SC5606 they are the corrections to edition 6. What I mean is you won't find what changes were made to edition 5 before edition 6 was published. If someone has got that list then you shouldn't be too bad.

When do you plan on getting your own boat and actually using the charts??

I think that being that close to launch, I would personally just get a new copy of the charts (I think both SC5606 & SC5607 have had revised editions this July - 7th for SC5606 and 6th for SC5607). I know its another £40 (welcome to boating /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif) but it will save you a hell of a lot of time and you can rest assured that you have the latest data to sail from.

You can always put the others for sale for a tenner or so... I'm sure someone will have some use for them... plenty good enough for passage planning at home!

We were in exactly the same situation earlier this year. I email Admiralty Leisure to express my concern, and this was their reply ....

-----------------------------------------------------------
"Thank you for your enquiry regarding the folio SC5611.

As you only purchased this folio some weeks ago and the new edition (2nd) was only released on the 15th March 2007, if you would like to return your 1st edition to your retailer and ask them to exchange it for the latest 2nd edition. Your retailer can then send the folio back to us through the normal channels.

Apologies for the inconvenience this has caused and I will be forwarding your comments to the Product Manager.

I hope you find this information of use but should you require further assistance please do not hesitate to contact us.

Armed with that email, I went back to the boatyard and they swapped the folio for the current edition.

A & K,

A few chart-type thoughts to help you on your way:

- We all start assiduously correcting every chart we have using Notices to Mariners.

- With time the penny drops that Passage charts, covering large areas of sea, change in no way material to our purposes.

- Even pilotage charts, dealing with land and estuary approaches, have only restricted needs of correction for our purposes. Areas with shifting sands are a clear example of where close attention has to be paid to changes. Soundings will be taken there frequently - as in the Thames - but small depth changes, and consequent small movements of buoyage are not material to us. New hazards - eg sunken vessels, oil rigs etc are important. So a selective approach is to be recommended.

Trying to keep a whole slew of charts totally up to date (remember the notified changes are often months old) can wear you down. I buy new charts of the Thames for instance, every 2-3 years, 'cos changes make a mess of old charts.

Following this approach you will indeed keep up with the important changes and edit out the lesser issues, so always have confidence that your charts won't let you down.

Applying this to your current situation, I would read the notified changes, spot the big issues, make selected corrections and move on.

Remember if you look in the last few pages of each months PBO most of the corrections which reflect the needs of the small boat owner are published there. It's true these are often some what out of date, but this is because they first have to be notified to UKHO and then published in NTM's, which are then sorted and published in the next available copy of PBO.

Well, thanx to everyone for there replies. It gave me plenty of food for thought.

But basically, I've bitten the bullet as JMKent sudgested and I've been out and bought the latest editon of the Folio, Edition 7, so I know they are they latest available, and I'll start from scratch with the updates and NM's. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Gandy, I emailed Admiralty last night, but the reply I got back today?? Mmm, think they misunderstood me... They spent half a side of A4 explaining justifying the need to Update their charts!!..LOL /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

All I wanted to know was when Edition 6 was published.. Might try again, but now I've got my new charts, dont think I need to..

And thanx Peter. Theres some good points to think about there.

I'm sure It will all come back to me.. Mmmm, me's thinking of a Day Skipper Theory refresher.. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
