... has anyone been there as a visiting sailor?

is it worth considering as an anchroage in suitable wather?

It would be nice to find a decent anchorage in St Austell bay.... Charlestown look like it dries quite far out and is a bit open....shame that you cant lie in the inner harbour...

Have you tried Portmellon beach or north of Gerrans point off of one of the beachs??

Sounds like a idea for a little weekend expidition this summer... We are normally in such a rush to go west that we go right past...

I've anchored off and dinghied ashore to look at the wooden ships in the harbour. Had a nice lunch in cafe/pub/hotel to the west of the harbour. It was a while ago, I forget details.
Holding was fine but weather was nice.

There is a grockle museum there, but we just walked around the harbour and up the hill a bit taking photos of our boat alone in the sunshine.

Definitely worth a lunch stop in fine, settled weather, then on to Fowey for the evening!
Not sure I'd miss an evening in the Golants to stay over night though?

Got any spare berths? :-)

We've been in the harbour quite often, but only on the tide. Best spot seems to be on the right, on a sort of jetty. Other wise we've anchored ouside.

You can make arangements with the owners and go inside the lock. Dont know the detais.

It's a lovely place for an hour or two.

Over night, either anchor, or go in the lock, though I suspect thats not possible for just an odd night.

It is a bit tight in the harbour. Ok for us. But..............

Not been there, but planning on spending half term week in St Austell bay/Mevagissey bay area subject to weather, so may well visit for a look around.
I won't be locking in to the harbour though, £41 to lock in plus £1.76 per foot makes it around £92 for one night for a 29 footer, makes Salcombe and the Yealm look cheap!

I locked in a few years ago, they charge per lock opening (or used to) so if theres a few boats its cheaper per boat. If you phone them they will tell you when they have scheduled openings. Well worth a visit to see the Square Riggers.
