I have a volvo md6a with a dynastart which has just burnt out, the armature I believe. I've now got a new replacement unit & am not sure as to what & how I should be checking the the system to make sure there isn't another fault which caused this to happen or was it just old age! The original fault was noticed by the charging light coming on & staying on however the following day all seemed OK. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi. The usual problem with the MD6A and Dynastart is trying to charge a very flat battery through the dynastart as it can only give about 10 - 11 amp charge. A very easy modification to make that protects teh charging windings in the dynastart is to put a 10 amp fuse in-line with the charging output. Quite a few of teh Vegas disconnect the charging circuit of the Dynastart and just use the starter part.
Another problem is if the solenoid sticks on then the dynastart just keps running and tries to start the engine even though the engine iis running. Due to the noise of the engine you cannot hear the dynastart. Hope this helps.

An essential piece of kit for your dynastart is an amp meter. See if you can find one from a car breaker with charge and discharge indicated by a needle. This will show if it is charging now. A voltmeter will also indicate if it is charging by showing the battery voltage slowly rising after starting the engine up to about 13.75 volts. ..olewill
