Charging on a Beneteau Oceanis 36cc

I've recently joined a syndicate and we have a Beneteau Oceanis 36cc in Spain, built 2002. I believe we may have a problem with the batteries getting over charged when connected to shore power. I'm not visiting the boat until early March so I'm just trying to get a heads up on what the problem could be.

So my question is does anyone know what sort of charger was usually fitted to this boat?

Thanks in advance.

It could be any type as they are not always fitted as original equipment. It should be a multi stage charger with 2 or 3 outlets, each programmable for different battery types to ensure that it charges at the correct rate for each battery bank. If it is overcharging then it is either programmed incorrectly or it is not cuting off to float charge when the battery is fully charged.

20amp dolphin (if I remember well) factory installed in a Beneteau Oceanis 361, 2002 model. Could be the same. But unless there's something wrong with the charger it stops charging when batteries are full.

Thank you - this is what I suspect might be happening i.e. a damaged battery has damaged the charger and when the batteries reach 14.5V the charger is not reducing the charge to a trickle/float.

So I'm trying to find the charger make/model so I can get a price for fixing or replacing it :(

There are plenty of 20 amp multi stage chargers around. I fitted a Synergex, which is at the lower end of the price scale. Would be best to check the physical space available beforehand and buy the charger here.

My Bene 351 had a Merlin 20 amp charger, my 381 had a Dolphin 20 amp charger. I fitted a Sterling all singing dancing 50 amp charger ( I also upped the domestic bank 3 110 amp hour batteries. Beneteau seemed to fit what ever could be got at the time as a deal, so it could be anything. If a battery is knackered it wont reach voltage and the charger will continue to charge! so just check them first before lashing out! If it is a bog std charger like mine were then it will keep putting out! Mind you the batterries will be dry soon and smelling!

How do you know that the batteries are being overcharged?

What voltage are they reaching?

What voltage does the charge fall to when fully charged (Float Voltage)

What type of batteries do you have?

How are you measuring the battery voltage? Many analogue dials are not accurate enough to measure the small differences in voltages. Suggestion - you get a good digital multimeter before you go.

Another possibility.
If the supply there has frequent dropouts, your charger may go onto timed boost charge after each episode. The Cristec ones sometimes used by Benetaeu definitely do.
If the boat is being left for some time the boost should be disabled for this reason.

Beneteau response

One more thing. If you send an email to Beneteau with your hull number they will know (and will tell you) what had been installed by the factory in your boat.

Do you have this E Mail address? I have tried several times to contact Beneteau with one question or another and really never received a satisfactory answer.
