I have just bought another hand-held VHF. The instructions, as do all rechargable items, it seems, say clearly "Use only the manufactureres charger" Makes sense so far. However, in common with most, I have accumulated hundreds of those little black chargers and now have little idea which charges what. They are virtually all annonymous with little clue given as to what thing they are meant to recharge. PLEASE, why can't manufacturers apply their logo at least onto the charger as well as onto the thing to be charged. It would save so much confusion.
Rant over.

I totally agree with you. I am fed up with searching through a draw full of these things to try to find the right one.

Why can't things be a bit more standardised??

I spent some time labelling all mine. But still have problems. I use a bluetooth hands free. So do I keep the charger at home at the office or in my brief case.

I call the things wall warts.

If its 4.8V or 9.6V ...... put them all in the drawer and buy a dual charger unit from a Radio Control Model Shop ....... which charges at steady rate without damage ... typically 250mA .......
You can even get chargers based on 12V input from same source to do the same.

Anyway - just a suggestion.

I agree re the confusion, however a tip I use is to put label in both the 'black box' and the cable by the plug, I started this after I accidently plugged the wrong charger into my high power tourch and burnt it out, it was like a kids puzzle book trying to follow all those leads to find the right one!

You can get label machines for < £20 in argos / maplins etc, and find it really useful to have on board.

One of the biggest headaches with them is not the power rating etc. - as most actually do the samer despite labeling ...... they 'pulse' the electric to provide the relevant charge. The real problem is the centre pin of the plug ..... on one appliance its -ve, on another its +ve.

WHY do manufacturers not follow a single practice and standardise this simple fact ???????

I blew a scanner the other day on this one simple matter - voltage / amps no problem ..... centre pin was other polarity.

In a VERY few cases it's because of special requirements, but mostly so they can sell chargers.

Where you have a number of bits of kit with different requirements and are using diferent chargers rather than one multi-purpose job, you could put different coloured bits of tape or blobs of paint on each bit of kit and charger to match them up - red kit to red charger, green to green, etc.
