Hi, I wonder if anyone with a charcoal heater (specifically Pansy, but anything of a similar size) could give me an idea of their real-life fuel consumption please? I've had a Google, but with little success... TIA!

My Pansy takes a lot to get it going but once burning it seem economical, about 1/2 a bag in 12 hours. Now, if only I knew the size of the bags this post might be more useful!

I had a small charcoal heater on a 28 foot boat and I used to 'pre-pack' charcoal into brown paper bags scrounged from the greengrocer. As far as I remember, a couple of those kept the boat warm throughout the long autumn evenings.

I have a Bengco and store my charcoal in those yellow flare containers (not the half size ones). I get three days of continuous use in mild weather with the bottom vent just cracked and two days continuous use with the vent open a bit more. Just over a day with it on blast furnace mode. (from one container). Briquets are horrible - too much ash/residue and stink (and less heat). Lumpwood is the stuff.

My longest burn before refilling is 18 hours - so no getting up in the night to top up. Left it on for weeks - sailing and when leaving boat.

I love using this heater almost as much as I love sailing!

On a previous boat I had a Bengco (I'm getting another!) It will burn for 6 hours on one filling, air control almost shut. Plenty of heat for a 28 footer

Thanks very much for all the replies!

Do you know how many kgs of lumpwood charcoal you put in one of your containers?

What I'm really trying to guestimate is how much (in money terms) it would cost to run for an 'average' (I know, how long is a piece of string...!!!) week in winter.

I dont really know

looks like a a 5kg bag into one flare container - then charcoal at £1 a kilo then approx £5 for two days at say - half setting.
