Hi

I'm researching the family history & was trying to find out what happened to the yacht (converted Thames or Dutch Barge) "Chanteclair" that was owned by my grandfather Ernest (Pat) Bisley & great grandfather Harry Dipple (Broadstairs Sailing Club co-founder) in the 1930's-40's.

If anyone has any info on her or I would be glad to hear from you either via the forum or pm me.

Many thanks and Happy Christmas!

Looking at Lloyds Register of Yachts from 1953 - 1980, it was recorded in all the ones I looked at, for most of the time owned by Dr Geoffrey Toothe, port of registry Ramsgate, but no home port listed, and no owner listed 1980. The name is always recorded as "Chantecler", as an AuxBoier steel, with leeboards, built Lemmer 1910.

There was a very similar one moored at Shepperton by the lock house throughout late 60's to late 70's (and perhaps much longer) but I think it's name was "Seven Bells"

Hi

I can't answer with any certainty, re: Trintella of Avon being kept on the East Coast.

Her original owner had her registered in Poole (he lived near Bournemouth) but I don't know for sure he kept her there.

The next owner kept her in Lymington (but not sure if all the time) & I kept her in Langstone Harbour, then the Exe and for the winter on the Dart.

Many thanks for this info.

My father told me that she had been over to Dunkirk but couldn't remember the correct spelling. A quick search on google led me to the Dunkirk Little Ships site - the info listed ties in with yours except date 1919 not 1910. See here

And then onto an article on the BBC peoples war section where someone has posted an account of the trip she made to Dunkirk and back. see here

I am going to see if I can find her. I think she may have taken part in Amsteram Sail 2005 if she is "Chantecler - Lemsteraak". Lemsteraak appears to be the description of the type - here is a 15m example (not Chantecler):

I'll report back on progress!

Thanks again

Looking again at a 76' Lloyds Register, Chantecler was at Hoo Marina perhaps being used a a live aboard. There's lots of old barges being used just up and downstream of this marina, although looking at Google Earth at the area I don't think it's there now. However, if there's any long term resident they may be able to know what happened.

Trintella is noted as having Keyhaven as a home port in 76'.
