With the wind looking southerley or at best south easterly, we're considering going to Alderney for Saturday. Possibly down to Gurensey for Sunday.

Anybody else going that way or are you all going to slog to Cherbourg ?

Not crossing this weekend - too much fog in the forecast

There is that to consider. I think we will see what happens when we get close to the Needles and make a decision then.

I remember a trip last year where we moored up outside Yarmouth on the Friday night ready to go in the morning. Woke at 5.00 to a pea souper...went back to bed.

Quick discussion with Harbourmaster at 0810 who thought it would clear so we went for it.

Lovely sail to St Vaast. I think you've got to be flexible and have at least a plan B.

Sailed to Cherbourg on Saturday in 12 hours, with the motor off after the first 3 hours in the fog. One of our best crossings with the wind building to a F5 easterly by the end and so much sun that my face went red.
Paid for it on the way back (today) motoring all the way.
Cherbourg had very few visitors. I guess the fog in the Solent put them off, which was a shame.

Well we tried but ended up pulling into Yarmouth saturday morning.

Strange thing was the skipper had replaced the VHF with a DSC unit.. very nice.

Trouble was he disturbed some wiring and the Yeoman plotter didn't work.
Just when we needed it in thick fog. Blind nav Yachtmaster style all the way down
Southampton water.

Saw loads of others in Yarmouth including bignick who abandoned the Cherbourg idea.
