Please can any of you who regularly sail the Channel Island recommend me to the best pilot / sailing directions for the area?

I have the Shell Channel pilot which is fine as far it goes, which is basically only the main harbours. Also Reeds has some info. What I'd like to find (if it exists) is something that covers the best anchorages and eyeball pilotage of the various channels.

I know there is an RCC pilot - any good? Or is there a suitable local publication?

I can't get to the Cruising Association library or into a sailing bookshop this week, and I don't want to buy something without seeing it or getting a recommendation.

Thanks.

I assume you are talking about "The Channel Islands" by Peter Carnegie for the RCC and published by Imray. If so the answer is very good indeed.

Peter Carnegie is a local YM instructor. One of my crew did a 5 day RYA course with him and he certainly knows the waters well.

I have a copy of the book and relied on it heavily last summer when my chartplotter went on the blink. Good pictures explaining transits and clear descriptions. Used his advice to go to the Ecrehous and it was easy.

Can't say if there is anything better, but Carnegie's book gets my vote.

Was just about to reply to your PBO post and you deleted it!

Anyway Malcolm Robson Channel Islands Pilot is excellent. Seems quaint when you first look at it but he lived there and captured the key features perfectly with his line drawings and transits.

Enjoy.

While I wouldn't be without it, or his Normandy and Brittany pilots, they are all out of date.

For Guernsey, Sark and Herm, John Frankland's pilots are excellent.

Julian,

"The Channel Islands" by Peter Carnegie is certainly the one to go for - recently revised too. I believe the 'Malcolm Robson Channel Islands Pilot' is out dated, although it was very good, with good illustrations, many of the marks have now changed.

Happy Island Hopping.

Many thanks to you all for your prompt and helpful advice.

I think I might get the Carnegie RCC one as I like the style of the other RCC ones I've used. I'll definitely look at Frankland and Robson too. I'm not against having more than one as they give me something to read on dark nights.
