Call them on 16 and say you have 'routine traffic'. They will then ask you to switch to another channel.
Although I believe that doesn't apply with Solent CG? Don't they like you to clall them on 67 first of all?

Working channel.

For example, SOlent CG will usually ask anybody calling on 16 with Routine Traffic to go to 67, ie don't use 16 in future.

Oops, it's only Solent CG who encourage people to call them on 67 first due to the amount of traffic that there is in the area generally.

Outside of the Solent area the correct protocols is as posted by Cantana.

From the horses mouth, a certain Coast Guard down West who said "oh yes, Solent don't like talking to yachties"

But yes Ch67 for radio checks (and they get plenty)
Officially I think you use Ch16 to initially contact Solent for any other traffic, they then normally ask you to go to Ch67
They also announce on Ch16 at 0040 0440 0840 etc... Use Ch 67 for radio checks (and normally after a radio check has been requested on ch16).

I find a good work around when I get fed up with the permanant DCS drive you bonkers bleep, is to monitor channel 16 on the hand held in the Solent and leave the main set switched off. This also avoids hearing the Ch16 radio checks (from vessels daft enough to still keep doing it that are thankfully out of range of the hand held), but keeps a listening watch for essential safety transmissions from the CG or vessels close enough.
