This may be of use to someone.
I recently changed one of these whilst the boat was still afloat. The old one had an increasing leak especially with the engine running in gear.
Lift outs are obviously pricey but also booking them round here can be difficult so I decided to do the job afloat.
Amazingly easy, much to my surprise.
First of all, split the gearbox coupling then removed shaft securing nut. Next bit was hardest, getting the coupling off the tapered shaft. Used an old gearbox end coupling, couple of longer nuts and bolts with a suitable socket wedged between them. Hey presto!
Then I got a diving oppo to nip under the boat and stuff a load of plastic bags around the shaft.
Quick swap of old for new including a clean up of the shaft and barely a drop of the sea entered the boat.
Packaging removed, copling back on, slight adjustment to engine mounts and job done.
Very happy with the money saved!!!
