Changing through hull transducer

I am replacing an ancient Navico depth sounder with a Clipper Duet (combined log and sounder) . The previous owner installed the log section and display of the Duet but did not install the supplied Clipper transducer.

Ought to be a simple replacement and plug in job but the new transducer is 36 mm in diameter and the plastic housing that holds the old tranducer (and screws on to the through hull fitting) is only 40 mm - leaving very little material to hold the new tranducer if I bore out the old one.

I understand I can't epoxy direct to the hull because it is foam cored.

Has anyone any ideas? Might there be a tailor made adaptor?

Yes you can and should. however I suspect the original hole will have been treated.

Not many hulls actually have foam core below the water line, so you need to confirm this first.

Having done so, the procedure is not too difficult. The important bit is preventing any water getting into the foam.

This is done by removing about an inch of the foam from around the hole, an Alan key inserted into a drill will make short work of this; then confirm it is very dry, and fill the area between the inner and outer skins with a mixture of epoxy resin and Micro fibres.

Thanks. Not sure I made myself clear. I am trying to avoid hull surgery by adapting the existing mount (Navico) which allows me to screw the transducer in and out of the hull fitting.

The boat is a Sadler 34 and I believe that attaching the transducer to the inside of the hull with epoxy is a non starter - because the foam core deadens the signal.

No9 problem, just remove the inner skin only, remove sandwich material and replace with epoxy as above.
