Has anyone any experience of changing from manual to hydraulic steering? Boat is 60ft, 2 steering positions, 18 in wheel in wheelhouse, deck steering position with 3ft diameter wheel. Any help would be really appreciated.
Check the Vetus catalogue - as well as their list of helm pumps, hydraulic cylinders and accessories, they publish a formula based on rudder size that helps you work out what size hydraulic cylinder is required. There's also advice on setting up dual steering positions. www.vetus.com
I am also looking inti this during the refurbishment of my boat, I have seen the vetus catalogue and feel the vetus offering is a good bet, but never buy a pig in a poke. Have a look at the A.S.A.P. catalogue, they have two or three hydraulic systems on offer. To determine what size of pump and damper is required, there is a calculation sheet available. Apparently it is down to rudder size and force acting upon rudder, both going forward and astern. The critical item for dual station is to be sure that the pump is fitted with non-return valves.
thanks for your help mal and bob. as there are hydraulics for sails thrusters anchor etc i was hoping there were attachments which could be added to get the required result. do you know if this is possible?
