Changing oil seals on Suzuki 2.2 Outboard

Hi - the Suzuki winter service saga continues!

I've drained off the old oil from the gearbox. It's grey/black gloupy and smelly... I think the seals may need replacing?
Is this a reasonably straightforward job?
I've undone the two nuts that hold the gear case housing in place, unfortunately the front stud bolt ('18' on this diagram ) is stuck...
So a couple of questions...
Am I right that these seals probably need changing?
How do I change them?
If I need to remove the gear case housing, what's the best way of gripping the stud bolt without damaging the thread...?

Many thanks!
Crisp

If the oil is not "clear and bright " there is almost certainly water getting in,

The black/grey appearance suggests some corrosion of the internals may have occurred.
Outboard gear oil is usually an EP oil. EP oil smells of rotting cabbages.

Water can get in via the prop shaft oil seal, the drive shaft seal, the drain/fill and level screw seals ( which should always be replaced rather than reused) or when there is gear selection through the shift rod seal

You could try locking two nuts together on the stud. Lack of space may mean you have to use two half nuts

Heat may help. Loads of boiling water or a hot air gun

You will have to remove the circlip from the bottom end of the drive shaft in order to withdraw it to change the seal. Take care to restrain the clip or it will fly away to some remote part of the cosmos never to be seen again

While you are tearing it down to replace the seals renew the pump impeller

Lightly grease all the screw threads when you re-assemble it

Evening.
I still can't get the gear box off my Suzuki 2.2... I've undone both nuts that hold the box to the lower unit.
I'm presuming that it should just pull off... But maybe it's more complicated than that?
As it works pretty well, I'm considering throwing in the towel and simply changing the oil drain seals and hoping for the best.
Maybe a job for Lockdown 4...
Am I right that the gear box should just slide out?
Thanks,
Crisp

Id want to change the prop shaft seal at least but I am not sure if you can get the waterpump out to access it with the water tube still in place..

is the gearcase showing any signs of dropping or is it stuck to one of the studs

It's dropped at the back and just enough to get a screwdriver in at the front, but feels firmly resistant.
The impeller is behind the propeller, I've changed that.
Presumably, the prop shaft seal is behind the impeller, but I've been warned against removing the panel behind the impeller... Things get very complicated apparently...
I think I'm going to reassemble and check it's all still working.
Also, my wife is accusing me of being even more boring...
Many thanks for all the help!

Did you loosen off the one behind this wee cover ?

Yes I did, thanks. The nut and washer came off, but the bolt itself is jammed. However, I don't think that's what's stopping the gearcase from moving as there's space around the bolt...
