I have been thinking about moving to a different cruising area for at least a couple of years, we are currently located in the SW and initially thought about Scotland but recent threads about the weather are making us think twice. We are now considering the East coast which I know well from my childhood but not the marinas etc. Now looking at Fambridge any comments or suggestions for the Orwell or elsewhere?

You would do better to post this on the East Coast Forum.

Fambridge has a marina and valet mooring in the river. An hours notice and your boat is brought to the pontoon where you leave on your return. £2 a time. The downside is that Fambridge is quite a way up the Crouch which is OK for river sailing but to get out to the Whittaker where you can turn right or left can take 3 or hours and is horrible if the tide and wind are against you.

Loads of marinas and moorings on the Orwell - all 24 hour access. Good river sailing in the Orwell and Stour, easy access to the open sea and short hops to many of the East Coast delights (Walton Backwaters, Deben, Blackwater etc). I don't know about availablity but plenty on the forum are based there and can comment.

N Wales is a good central base location for cruising holidays to Scotland, B Channel/S wales and Eire/Isle of Man, apart from Wales itself, which is beautiful and quiet. Lots of marinas from Liverpool down to Aberystwyth(which will seem cheap by S Coast standards and plenty of deep water moorings for £100 - 400 per year. Menai Straits has a lot going for it and is worth considering.
