Changing from Calor gas propane to campingaz

My gas locker is just big enough to take the Calor gas cylinders. Up to now my Force 10 cooker has been running on propane.

In France there are not any readily available propane cylinders which are small enough in diameter to go into the locker. The closest is the Butagaz "Le Cube" which is about one centimeter to wide.

So it looks like I will have to change over to use campingaz cylinders which are butane.

So can I just take a campingaz screw in regulator and hook it up? As far as I can tell, the Force 10 is propane/butane compatible with nothing to change.

Any advice?

yes just change the regulator

You could also consider a dual fuel regulator for propane or butane

The snag may be that unlike the Calor butane and propane cylinders the Camping Gas cylinders do not have a valve.

There is an adaptor valve available from the usual sources that fits the Camping Gas bottle and onto which the normal Calor butane cylinder connector will fit.
No means of directly connecting a Camping Gas cylinder directly to a system set up for propane as far as I know.

Alternatively a Camping Gas regulator and isolating valve combined fitted directly to the Camping Gas bottle and the Lp pipework connected to it. ( Fulham nozzle hose fitting). It makes changing cylinder a bit awkward as you either have to detach the LP hose every time or attempt to unscrew the old and screw on the new bottle to the regulator. I detach the LP hose, swap the regulator to the new bottle and then reattach the hose. I have a hose clip that can be undone and done up by hand.

But if the Force 10 cooker is jetted for Butane at 28-30mb and Propane supplied at 37mb as per normal, then Propane at 30mb is going to result in very slow cooking and/or burners that won't stay lit.

The dual 30mb regulators require (modern) appliances to match: check the data plate somewhere on the cooker for what pressures it will operate with.

Yes, as far as you can tell. Unfortunately that isn't far enough.

The point I was trying, and evidently failing, to make is that there are 2 standards of propane appliance and regulator, 37mb and 30mb.
37mb appliances are most common in the UK and will be found on the vast majority of boats.
30mb is the new Euro standard introduced circa 2004 and is the norm in caravans and motorhomes built since that date.
I don't know which is fitted to current production boats.

Appliance and regulator must be matched hence my suggestion that the appliance data plate be checked, as your recommended regulator may not be appropriate.

All irrelevant to the OP of course as he's decided to use butane..

Edit: that should say there are 2 common standards of propane appliances. Plenty of 50mb ones in German boats and motorhomes too..

In the grand scheme of things you have made the right choice IMHO. Me I suck it and see, my Bene originally came with camping gaz, i changed the reg to a calor gas one and the stove worked fine, during the winter it was too cold for the butane so i put a propane reg on and used calor propane, no probs.
So theory and all that is ok BUT you cant beat practical useage to see if it works or not!

According to the Southampton Calor Centre website that is correct ( but as said the details should be on a plate on the cooker)
"The Force 10 cooker is supplied with electronic ignition on all burners and a mounting hardware kit. It is made to operate at 30mb and will run using LPG – Propane or Butane."

It is operating at present on propane and hopefully that is via a 30mb regulator.

If the regulator is bulkhead mounted (as opposed to being bottle mounted ), and I think a 30mb dual fuel regulator will be, I would keep the existing regulator, fit it with a hose with a butane bottle end fitting and an adaptor valve to the Camping Gas bottle. ( http://www.socal.co.uk/Toolbox/Regu...T_4010_Camping_Gaz_Cylinder_Adapter/430/18119 )

The system is then versatile. It can accomodate Camping Gas bottles, small Calor butane bottles, or propane (subject to the size of the locker of course)

The only catch in this, and there are threads on it, is that Camping Gaz is much more expensive than ordinary domestic gas. The 907 (2.75kg) bottle is not much cheaper than a 13kg one for our house.
