How easy is this? Is it a case of a simple disassembly / reassembly, or is it more likely that the bolts will sheer off and a sledgehammer will be required to remove the manifold?!

What about swapping the engine mounting rubbers? An easy job or a nightmare to remove, replace and re-align?

I'm trying to decide whether to do this work myself or pay someone else to do it. I'm reasonably practical having done plenty of work on cars in the past, but I'd be grateful for any comments / advice from those that have tackled these specific jobs.

The engine's in a Westerly Storm and the gearbox is the type that angles the propshaft downwards.

The exhaust elbow should come off fairly easily. The most difficult bit will be getting the rubber exhaust pipe off the elbow. Be sure to note carefully how the plumbing pipes are fitted. Use a new gasket and new rubber seals when you replace.

The engine mounts are relatively easy to replace. You'll need to support the weight of the engine in some way - wooden blocks under it, with wedges, should do the trick. Doesn't matter whether you do the front first or the back, but don't try to do all 4 at the same time. I'd suggest you draw around the mounting plates on the engine bearers with a marker pen before undoing the bolts, it will help when reinstalling them. The front mounts come off together with the U-shaped beam; check this carefully for cracks. The rear mounts are fitted on brackets bolted to the engine - check these for cracks, the original ones were bent steel and were prone to cracking, they've been replaced by cast brackets now.

If you get the mounting plates back in the right positions, there shouldn't be a lot of alignment to do. The idea is to get the prop shaft central in its tube, then use feeler gauges to check that the coupling on the engine is both in the right place and parallel to the coupling on the shaft.

It's worth checking the tightness of the mounting nuts after the engine's done a few hours motoring.

Pictures are worth a thousand words. If you go to any Volvo Penta dealer's website, there should be a link to an online parts shop which will have exploded diagrams of the bits you're dealing with.

the Storm has very good engine access so both jobs should be straight forward.
aligning the engine is not difficult & 2 prs of hands make lighter work of it
 
Thanks to you both for the info. Some useful tips there pvb. I wouldn't have thought of marking the positions of the mounts until it was too late!
 
exhaust elbow

I recently needed to remove well rusted in studs for elbow from engine block (faulty siphon valve had helpfully sprayed engine with seawater) - put two nuts on them twisted against each other to spanner them off and soon realised that they would probably shear. So after liberal WD40 I used one of those little butane soldering guns (Ronstan?) and applied local heat to each stud and they came out a treat.

No problem - it is a simple assembly operation. make sure you replace all 4 mounts ( tried the replace just one approach and it didnt work) and the re-alignment is easy too if likely to take a bit of time.

Its a simple solid old cast iron engine. If you ever worked on a BMC A series its about that type of construction.
 
Well I swapped the exhaust manifold and replaced the exhaust hose and, whilst I've yet to run the engine as the boat's out of the water at the moment, everything seemed to go ok. The last person to do the job had greased the securing bolts before replacing them and they spun out by hand once they'd been cracked off. I wasn't expecting that!

The only slight concern I have is that there are 3 slots in the exhaust elbow that correspond to 3 slots in the cylinder head where it bolts on (see: http://www.volvopentashop.com/RKMar...es/7726000/7726000_26/7726000_165/7726000_179). The ones in the cylinder head are completely blocked and, whilst I managed to dig some of the crud out, I reached a point where I seemed to just be hitting metal.

Does anyone know what these are for? It seems odd that they're there if they serve no purpose and yet I can't see how they could be meant to flow water as it would just end up in the exhaust manifold!

As for the exhaust mounts, when I found out that they were at least £50 each (just the rubbers :eek:) I thought the vibration wasn't so bad after all....

As always, any help would be much appreciated.
